As a fan of suspenseful, quirky, and supernatural television series, I can’t help but feel excited about Peacock’s new offering, Hysteria! With its intriguing premise and an impressive cast that includes Julie Bowen, Anna Camp, Elijah Richardson, and even the great Bruce Campbell, this show promises to deliver a rollercoaster ride of fear, mystery, and laughter.

Acknowledging to yourself that you may be losing your grip on sanity can be tough. Telling someone else about it seems almost unimaginable. The fear of them not believing you and intensifying the feelings of loneliness, disconnection, and doubt about reality is all too real. This is precisely how Linda Campbell (played by Julie Bowen) feels in a sneak peek from Peacock’s upcoming Satanic Panic series, Hysteria! (the entire eight episodes will be released tomorrow).

Initially living a carefree life as both a mom in the suburbs and a hairdresser, Linda now finds herself questioning if something sinister might be hidden within their home, much like Diane Freeling from the movie ‘Poltergeist’. Regrettably, her husband Gene (portrayed by Nathan Drake’s actor, Nolan North) doesn’t seem to share her mounting worries about a potentially malicious supernatural force. Is it any wonder why?

Julie Bowen shares with us over Zoom that she portrayed a mother character for some time on “Modern Family”, but she never wanted to leave behind Claire Dunphy. However, she also felt the urge to try something new and different. Indeed, this new role is quite distinct, as she explains: “Linda” is a woman facing potential loss of sanity, which is not a character trait I’ve explored before.

What is Hysteria! about?

Amidst the atmosphere of the late 1980s, the narrative of “Hysteria!” unfurls in the fictional small town of Happy Hollow, Michigan. The disappearance of the star high school quarterback, seemingly orchestrated by a Satanic cult, sends shockwaves through the town. Coincidentally, a local heavy metal band, consisting of misfits Dylan Campbell, Jordy, and Spud, perceive this commotion as an opportunity and feign worshipping Satan to attract more listeners to their music. However, their plan backfires when religious zealot Tracy Whitehead begins stirring up the townsfolk into a frenzy.
