Julie Bowen Reveals Happy Gilmore 2 Is De-Aging The Actors, But For A Good Reason

As a lifelong fan of Adam Sandler and his unique brand of comedy, I must admit my excitement for the upcoming sequel to the classic ’90s film, Happy Gilmore, is palpable. The prospect of seeing the original cast de-aged and returning to their iconic roles has me reminiscing about a time when flannel shirts, neon colors, and grunge music ruled the airwaves.

Although de-aging actors in movies can sometimes be risky, I was taken aback to discover that the upcoming “Happy Gilmore 2” would employ this method. Nevertheless, considering it’s been nearly three decades since the original ’90s film by Adam Sandler, and a significant portion of the cast is returning, Julie Bowen shared insights on how they plan to effectively utilize this post-production approach.

Since the premiere of “Happy Gilmore” back in 1996, the world has undergone significant transformations, particularly in the field of technology. Innovations such as AI have raised eyebrows within the film industry due to their potential for replacing human actors and thus diminishing job opportunities. Nevertheless, when employed ethically, these advancements can lead to impressive special effects. In combination with post-editing and expert makeup techniques, filmmakers now have the ability to make actors appear younger, a technique that the makers of this movie have chosen to employ for a valid reason, as shared by Bowen in an interview with Collider.

As a fan, I must say it’s quite an unusual experience. The use of flashbacks means I find myself adorned in clothes and hairstyles from back then, which aren’t my personal favorites, but I can’t complain as they also get to de-age me, something I’ve never experienced before! I’m all smiles at the prospect of seeing what that transformation will look like. There’s a lot of exciting elements to this project. Plus, it’s fantastic to see Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald] again, and even some familiar faces from the crew. Adam is an absolute joy to work with – he’s loyal, kind, and includes his team right from the start. Perry [Andelin Blake], our production designer, has been by Adam’s side since Happy Gilmore, and you wouldn’t be able to tell that decades have passed!

All in all, I’m quite eager to find out how they employ de-aging techniques within the movie. Frankly, I can hardly contain my excitement to witness this ensemble acting in the current era as well as being transported back to the ’90s.

The Big Daddy actor does have a habit of re-hiring actors in his films, but as a Sandler enthusiast, I love to see how many familiar faces I can spot. A typical Happy Madison production includes a healthy amount of SNL alum, famous cameos, and an appearance by his wife Jackie. For example, Happy Gilmore director Dennis Dugan makes a brief cameo as the alcoholic doctor in Grown Ups 2.

Additionally, stars such as Travis Kelce and Margaret Qualley are already set to appear in Happy Gilmore 2, but I’m guessing we’ll also see some familiar faces from Adam Sandler’s old crew joining the game on the green. For instance, it seems likely that Kevin Nealon may reprise his role as one of Happy’s professional golf adversaries.

30 years have passed since Happy Gilmore graced our screens, and sadly, some of its beloved actors have moved on. We may possess the ability to de-age, but creating scenes without fresh footage remains a challenge. Mostly, I believe the sequel will be resourceful enough to circumvent the void left by Bob Barker and Gilmore’s grandma. Yet, as a fan who cherishes these characters, I can only hope that the actor from Murder Mystery pens a touching tribute to them in the film.

Considering the options and constraints, it’s intriguing which flashback scenes the writers opted for. I believe these sequences will introduce fresh ’90s events (thanks to de-aging), but what truly excites me is the possibility of the climactic scene where Happy saves the tower, being reprised. Unlike Julie Bowen, I’m eager to witness a brief revisit of ’90s style to observe which trends still thrive or are making a resurgence. Here’s hoping they manage to find that classic Bruins jersey from back then.

Despite what I’ve heard so far, every Adam Sandler film I’ve watched has been a delight for me. They stand the test of time. Therefore, I’m confident I’ll enjoy this sequel that carries on his legacy, and I’m intrigued to find out how they implement de-aging technology. Ultimately, if this new installment maintains the same warmth as the original, it should turn out just fine.

Looking forward to the day when I can stream “Happy Gilmore 2” with my Netflix subscription! Fingers crossed for its inclusion in our 2025 movie lineup. Rest assured, as more details about the production and release emerge, we’ll make sure to keep you all informed!
