Julie Delpy to Receive Lifetime Honor at Sweden’s Gotenborg Film Festival

As a gamer with a deep passion for cinema and a particular fondness for the works of Julie Delpy, I can hardly contain my excitement about her receiving the Honorary Dragon Award at the 2025 Göteborg Film Festival!

Delpy’s four-decade career spanning both sides of the camera is a testament to her versatility and talent. From her early performances in European art house films to her breakthrough with Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise, Delpy has consistently demonstrated an ability to blend humor, depth, and sensitivity in a way that resonates with audiences worldwide.

I remember the first time I watched Three Colours: White, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s masterpiece, starring none other than our beloved Julie Delpy. The film left a lasting impression on me, and it was the beginning of my journey into Delpy’s extraordinary body of work.

Seeing her transition to directing with features showcasing her characteristic blend of cultural commentary and relationship dynamics has been nothing short of inspiring. I eagerly await the premiere of Meet the Barbarians at this year’s festival, and I can hardly wait for my chance to ask Julie Delpy all about it during her Q&A session!

In closing, I must say that receiving an Honorary Dragon Award from such a prestigious film festival as Göteborg is truly well-deserved. In fact, if I were a dragon, I’d be honored too! After all, who wouldn’t want to share the screen with Julie Delpy?

Joke: And on a side note, I’ve always wondered – if Julie Delpy were a dragon, would she still have a French accent or would it sound more like “Dragon Delpy”?! 😉

At the 2025 Göteborg Film Festival, French artist Julie Delpy will receive the prestigious Honorary Dragon Award. This was made public by the festival’s organizers on Thursday.

The experienced movie director and performer is set to appear at the Swedish festival to showcase her newest directorial work, titled “Meet the Barbarians“, and engage in a public discussion about her illustrious four-decade career, which encompasses roles behind and in front of the camera.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but admire Julie Delpy. Her cinematic voice stands out uniquely in the global film scene. Her work masterfully combines humor, depth, and empathy, striking a chord with viewers across the globe. She is undeniably a trailblazer, an inspiration – we are genuinely proud to bestow her with this year’s Honorary Dragon Award, as declared by Göteborg Film Festival artistic director Pia Lundberg.

The festival is set to exhibit a four-film series, highlighting Julie Delpy’s transformation from a celebrated actor into a writer-director. This collection features Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colours: White” (1994), Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” (1995), along with her own directorial works, “2 Days in Paris” (2007) and “Lolo” (2015).

Initially, Delpy garnered international fame through her roles in European art films, collaborating with directors like Kieslowski, Leos Carax (in 1986’s “Bad Blood”), and Agnieszka Holland (1990’s “Europa Europa”). However, it was the first installment of Linklater’s “Before” trilogy, “Before Sunrise”, that brought her to a larger audience. Later on, she moved behind the camera, directing films that reflected her unique style combining social observations and relationship explorations.

Delpy is set to collect her Honorary Dragon Award at the Cinema Draken in Gothenburg on January 29, which follows the premiere of “Meet the Barbarians”. After the showing, she will engage in a question-and-answer session.

The 48th Göteborg Film Festival runs Jan. 24-Feb. 2.
