Gareth Edwards, who directed the latest Jurassic Park movie titled “Jurassic World Rebirth,” has started discussing possible sequels. Since early reviews suggest that his take on the dinosaur universe is another hit among viewers, it raises the likelihood of more Jurassic films being made in the near future. However, to clarify, a title like “Jurassic World Postnatal” would certainly not be suitable.
Edwards recently discussed ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ with Screen Rant, which is the seventh installment in Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur-filled universe that started in 1993. The action-packed series continues with a fresh set of characters, following the conclusion of the main character storylines in ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ (2022). Set in a new timeline, ‘Rebirth’ finds Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, the protagonists of ‘Jurassic World’, conspicuously absent.
The movie centers around a mixed team venturing to a distant island for the purpose of collecting genetic material that could potentially treat diseases afflicting people. In this story, Zora Bennett and Dr. Henry Loomis take on primary roles, while also presenting a family who’ve been adrift at sea following an attack by a Mosasaurus. Upon reaching their destination, they soon discover that this isn’t just a routine collection mission.
When questioned about a potential follow-up, Edwards openly expresses his thoughts. Although it appears that no preparations for a sequel are currently being made within this storyline featuring a fresh cast, it’s clear that the ever-evolving landscape of franchise movie production means nothing is definitively ruled out.
Perhaps there’s something hidden within [the movie]. However, no, our intention was to create this film as a self-contained piece. As I reflect on sequels and trilogies that I adore, they all share the characteristic that the initial film stood alone, and then the challenge of crafting subsequent ones became a prestigious dilemma.
I’ve never discussed a sequel with David Koepp, Frank Marshall, or Universal about this movie. As far as I know, everyone involved just wants the audience to enjoy the film, and we aim to make it as good as possible. After that, whether there will be more depends on the gods, essentially.
Is ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Appealing Enough to Start a Whole New Trilogy?
The movie was recently widely released only two days ago, making it challenging to make precise predictions about its success. Nonetheless, the box office earnings have been enormous, suggesting we might be witnessing another blockbuster in the dinosaur series that’s already garnered over $6 billion. All we can do now is wait for audience reactions to see if our suspicions are correct.
It’s worth considering if the plot is robust enough for a fresh franchise beyond its sales figures, especially when you consider that Jurassic World, which premiered in 2015, was almost guaranteed a sequel given its box office success (it ranks among the highest-grossing films ever made). However, over time, it became clear that the characters were not as fully developed. The revamp, titled Rebirth, introduces Zora Bennett and Dr. Henry Loomis, who are intriguing, but is their character depth sufficient to sustain an entire franchise?
