As a fanatic of video games, I can’t help but notice the surge of popularity in Hollywood adaptations, with blockbusters like “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Super Mario Bros.,” and series such as “The Last of Us” and “Fallout.” In the coming years, we’ll see some beloved titles get a live-action makeover, including “Ghost of Tsushima,” “God of War,” and “The Legend of Zelda.”
However, there’s another video game adaptation that may have slipped your mind – Universal Pictures’ “Just Cause” movie. This project was initially announced last May, but since then, it’s been quiet on the updates front… until now!
Due to The Wrap’s recent report, it has been confirmed that Aaron Rabin will script Universal’s adaptation of the Just Cause video game series, previously developed by Square Enix. Rabin is renowned for his work on Amazon Prime Video’s successful Jack Ryan series, featuring John Krasinski, and for producing the controversial Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Secret Invasion. The upcoming film is being directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, who recently oversaw the DC Extended Universe’s Blue Beetle movie, starring Xolo Maridueña.
As of now, an official launch date for “Just Cause” hasn’t been set yet. However, it boasts a talented group of producers working on it. What makes it even more intriguing is the involvement of the 87 Eleven stunt team, known for their work in the “John Wick” series and other projects, contributing to the film’s iconic, high-octane action sequences. David Leitch, who has worked on films like “Atomic Blonde” and “The Fall Guy”, is producing “Just Cause”. Alongside him, Kelly McCormick through 87North, with a first-look deal with Universal Pictures, are also involved in the project.
What Is ‘Just Cause’?
Unlike some other live-action video game adaptations that delve into deep, emotional narratives such as HBO’s “The Last of Us,” “Just Cause” is all about high-octane action right from the get-go. First introduced in 2006 by Avalanche Studios, “Just Cause” follows Rico Rodriguez on his mission to overthrow the corrupt regime ruling the fictional island of San Esperito. The franchise draws inspiration from and takes its name from the actual US operation, “Operation Just Cause,” which took place in 1989.
To date, there have been four games in the “Just Cause” series, with the most recent one launching in 2018. Fans of this franchise can’t seem to agree on which game is the best, but generally speaking, many people favor “Just Cause 3,” which came out in 2015. These games gained widespread acclaim for their dynamic and explosive environments, as players could watch Rico demolish military bases on the island of San Esperito. What makes these games even more exciting is that the main character, Rico, was equipped with a grappling hook and wing suit, enabling him to soar over the island, grab onto flying helicopters, and single-handedly bring down fighter jets!
The concept of “Just Cause” holds immense potential for a thrilling action film with careful execution. Both the narrative and the stunts should aim for practicality to ensure that the exaggerated and extraordinary actions appear somewhat plausible on the big screen. If the “Fast & Furious” series can send a car into space, then there’s a strong likelihood that “Just Cause” could also translate effectively onto the silver screen.
Just Cause hasn’t been given an official release date.
