I didn’t find Mario Kart World very appealing, and after the mini-Direct emphasizing the Switch 2’s debut game, I’ve started to question whether it’s worth investing in Nintendo’s new console.
As a longtime fan, I can’t help but reminisce about my deep-rooted affection for Mario Kart. From the countless hours spent on Mario Kart 64 to being utterly amazed by Double Dash during the GameCube years, it’s safe to say that Nintendo never failed to impress me. And when I thought they had reached their limit of surprising me, they delivered a fantastic portable version of Mario Kart on the Nintendo DS.
The more recent installments in this series were strong, let me emphasize that, however, something about them lacked the charm they once possessed. Frankly, I can hardly recall much about the Wii version, and revisiting Mario Kart 7 on a handheld seemed to undermine the significance of the franchise for me. By the time number 8 arrived, my interest in this intellectual property had waned. It was enjoyable, solid, deserving of being recognized among Nintendo’s top titles, but I found it hard to genuinely appreciate it.
Step into the realm of Mario Kart World. While its concept captivates, it’s a familiar journey for me. As I bid farewell to the enchanting Moo Moo Farm and Rainbow Road, I found solace in another franchise that struck all the right chords for me: Forza Horizon.
At first glance, Horizon’s concept of wild nature for limitless exploration seemed intriguing but appeared somewhat lacking in gameplay demonstrated during the Switch 2 reveal. However, during the MK World Direct on April 17th, I was won over again as I saw how each mode functions and what free roam has to offer.
As a gamer, I find myself drawn into the game world by the tantalizing allure of hidden secrets and side quests. Whether there are rewards for completing these tasks or not, I don’t really care – it’s simply a delight to fill out an otherwise vacant landscape with engaging activities. Admittedly, chasing after a carrot on a stick might seem dull to some, but if the new mechanics harmonize seamlessly with the game’s fundamental aspects, then I’m more than content to keep exploring and uncovering hidden gems.
Moreover, with their innovative approaches towards timeless modes such as Grand Prix and the thrilling Knockout mode that introduces a battle royale aspect into Mario Kart, my enthusiasm for this beloved franchise has been rekindled beyond measure.
The main issue that’s hard to ignore is definitely the high cost. Spending $80 is a significant amount, and it’s challenging, even when you think of it as a long-term investment. Putting down such a large sum initially can be tough, especially for the Switch 2 bundle which isn’t exactly pocket change.
Ultimately, whether Mario Kart World is worth its cost depends on each individual player. As a past enthusiast who’s been drawn back in by trailers, I find myself leaning toward purchasing it when it releases on June 5th.
