Kaitlin Olson Celebrated High Potential's Big Ratings Win, And Boy Do I Wish It's Always Sunny Got Numbers Like This

As a dedicated fan who has followed Kaitlin Olson’s career since her days as Sweet Dee on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I must say that watching High Potential is an absolute delight. After years of waiting for Olson to return to network television following the unfortunate cancellation of The Mick, it feels like a dream come true to see her shine once more.

Following only three episodes, it might be premature to proclaim ABC’s High Potential as the uncontested hit of the Fall 2024 TV season, but Kaitlyn Olson’s comeback to network television (after the backlash from the cancellation of The Mick) is certainly making a strong argument. In fact, even the actress herself expressed astonishment upon discovering that the second episode achieved ratings that I can only dream of for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

With audiences’ building curiosity and interest in what happened to Morgan’s husband years prior, Olson took to Instagram to celebrate the early success that High Potential has already earned, and it’s a testament to her universally enjoyable talents. In response to the report that the show’s second installment brought in over 10.72 million viewers after seven days of delayed-viewing stats, the actress and series producer shared the following message ahead of the third episode dropping:

Wow, I’m relieved there’s a fresh episode airing tonight! It seems someone can’t get enough of the first two episodes, rewatching them approximately 11 million times! Catch you later for episode three tonight!

In the second episode titled “Dancers in the Dark,” initially, about 3.68 million viewers tuned in on September 24. However, this figure nearly tripled over the following six days, resulting in a total viewership of approximately 10.78 million people during its first week. Additionally, the episode’s rating among viewers aged 18 to 49 increased significantly, rising from a 0.31 to a 2.2 rating, which is nearly seven times the original figure. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the combined total viewership across these periods amounted to around 3.09 million viewers.

Under the direction of Marc Webb, who previously worked on The Amazing Spider-Man, this installment managed to attract a larger audience than its initial release. This isn’t typically the case in network television. The first episode initially drew 3.59 million viewers and a 0.35 rating in the 18-49 demographic. However, after a week of streaming and DVR viewing, the viewership increased to 9.75 million (2.12 demo). When you add in additional ABC repeats for the premiere, the total audience exceeds 17.79 million people.

Kaitlin Olson Gets Some Love From Co-Stars Past And Present

I, a devoted fan, wasn’t surprised when even more warm congratulations poured in after she celebrated the early triumph of our beloved dramedy. Not only did her social media followers and admirers chime in, but also a threesome of my favorite co-stars from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, including her husband, joined the celebration. Even the talented actor portraying the uniquely named Walter Melon in “High Potential” expressed his delight. It feels incredible to be part of such an amazing community!

And speaking of…

I Hope High Potential’s Ratings Results In A Big Audience Boost For It’s Always Sunny

It’s likely that many viewers who appreciate her as high-potential talent, particularly for her roles as Sweet Dee Reynolds in ‘It’s Always Sunny’ and on Max’s Emmy-winning ‘Hacks’, also know Kaitlin Olson. Remarkably, she excels in leading roles across different ends of the ratings spectrum, demonstrating her versatility as a small screen queen.

As a dedicated fan, let me share an interesting comparison: If you recall, the peak same-day audience for It’s Always Sunny seems to have occurred during its Season 3 premiere, specifically “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby,” which first aired in 2007. Back then, shows didn’t rely as heavily on delayed viewing numbers as they do now. Fast forward to June 2023, the Season 16 premiere attracted approximately 305,000 viewers on its release day.

In essence, comparing the viewership numbers between “High Potential” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” isn’t really appropriate due to their different natures. However, given that the number of viewers for “High Potential” increased again with its third episode (3.78 million / 0.34 demo), there’s a good chance that Olson’s popularity on broadcast TV could attract more viewers when “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 17 premieres in the 2025 TV lineup.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a connection, but it might not be immediately obvious or easily proven that one event directly caused the other, even if “It’s Always Sunny” experienced an increase in viewership. However, someone with keen observation skills like Morgan might still find it hard to ignore the possible link.

Continue sharing news about the show “High Potential” to help boost its viewership even further as it airs every Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
