Kaitlin Olson's Characters Always Have Hilarious Exes, And Her New ABC Show Just Added An SNL Vet To Continue That Streak

As a long-time fan who’s seen more than my fair share of TV romances go south, I can hardly contain my excitement for ABC’s High Potential! The series is shaping up to be a delightful blend of humor and intrigue, with Kaitlin Olson once again showcasing her knack for portraying complex characters in less-than-ideal romantic situations.

Among the standout new TV series airing in Fall 2024, as far as I’m concerned, is ABC’s High Potential. Starring Kaitlin Olson, known for her roles on It’s Always Sunny, this show features Olson as a single mom with an exceptional talent for solving mysteries. Viewers accustomed to Olson’s characters often find themselves laughing at the disastrous romantic relationships they encounter. Rest assured, High Potential doesn’t shy away from that aspect either.

The new series, now in production, has recently enlisted Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam to join its successful ensemble cast, which also includes Raising Hope veteran Garret Dillahunt. As per Deadline, Killam will portray Ludo Radovic, a character who is known for his kindness, humility, charm, and wit in a significant recurring role. Notably, Ludo was previously the boyfriend of Morgan Olson.

In the story “High Potential”, Morgan is employed by a cleaning service that has ties with the local police department. In an unexpected turn of events, after reorganizing some evidence in a way that proved surprisingly helpful, she secures a position as a consultant working alongside Detective Karadec, played by Daniel Sunjata. Meanwhile, it seems that Morgan will be employing Ludo for childcare needs while she’s occupied at work.

In some instances, the actress’ characters often date unworthy individuals who are either poor choices or arrogant snobs. Yet, Ludo seems admirable. Caring for three children for an ex is almost implausible, even for a fictional TV series. It appears that Morgan might be the questionable character in this situation. Regardless of how it unfolds, I’m eager to watch Olson expressing her awkward charm in every interaction.

It’s clear to fans who have watched all 16 seasons of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” that Sweet Dee, played by Olson, has quite a history of regrettable past relationships. This list includes Lance Barber’s character Bill Ponderosa from Young Sheldon, a man with a reputation for infidelity and a fondness for bath salts, who was also a kidnapper. Additionally, there’s Li’l Kev, the mentally unstable rapper; Rex, the sensitive bar regular known for eating roaches; Colin, the Casanova thief; and Rickety Cricket, another unfortunate ex of Dee’s. Poor Dee indeed!

Olson’s fictional romantic counterparts aren’t exclusive to that particular series. In another one of her top-tier comedies, the much-lamented cult classic The Mick, we had one of television’s most appalling yet hilarious ex-boyfriends in Scott MacArthur’s Jimmy. The fact that he was always around made things even more chaotic. I assume Ludo will follow a similar pattern.

It’s important to remember that Kaitlin Olson portrayed Cheryl’s sister Becky on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and her brief romance with Larry David in Season 10 was quite memorable. Is there anyone on TV who seems less appealing as a romantic partner than Larry David?

Regarding “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Kaitlin Olson shared that after wrapping up the first season of “High Potential” in October, she will move on to filming Season 17 of “Sunny.” This new season is expected to air on FXX around 2025.

Speaking of Taran Killam, he’s been keeping quite a pace since departing from the Saturday Night Live cast. He’s dived into voice acting, bringing characters like Jooro in Star Wars and Nature Cat’s title character to life. Additionally, he’s recurred in American Crime Story and made appearances on numerous game shows. If you’re interested, give his guest spot on the theme park podcast Keys to the Kingdom a listen for some entertaining tales.

Before Dee commits any more inappropriate actions of a sexual nature, remember that the show “High Potential” is set to premiere on ABC’s prime-time schedule on Tuesday, September 17, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. You can stream it the following day if you have a Hulu subscription.
