In terms of comedic talent per minute, I’d wager that Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” are among the funniest duos in all of entertainment (although Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman might disagree). With the upcoming Season 17 of “Always Sunny,” Olson is strengthening her leading role, shining brightly as the top-tier star in ABC’s genre-defying dramedy “High Potential” for 2025. Additionally, she finds solace knowing that her co-star from “Mythic Quest” is a fan of hers.

She manages to discern that he’s a fan, despite him being an exceptionally talented actor who might be able to convincingly portray any role Daniel Day Lewis could — and possibly even surpass him — because of his genuine reactions rather than just the words he chooses to express himself with. On the talk show “Conan Needs a Friend”, Olson confided in host Conan O’Brien about her apprehension regarding taking on a program that caters to an audience beyond her typical demographic. She expressed her unease by stating:
As a cinephile confidant, let me tell you, there’s one film that had me quivering before sharing with Rob – the toughest critic I’ve ever encountered in this world of cinema. But when he gave it his stamp of approval, I couldn’t help but shed tears of joy – “We did it, team! We nailed it!
As a film enthusiast, when the ex-host of Late Night questioned us about our personal and professional dynamic, my partner Kaitlin Olson swiftly dismissed any suspicions that Danny McBride might sugarcoat his opinions due to our relationship. If he genuinely enjoys something, he does, but if he’s not a fan, he apparently transforms into a studio executive, as she humorously pointed out.
Straightforwardly candid. Regardless of our marital status, he wouldn’t intentionally hurt my feelings. However, he would express himself in a way that might seem excessive…for instance, he would keep pointing out edits and improvements even after the work was already complete and revised multiple times. He’d be like an editor swarming with suggestions. . . . ‘N-n-n-n-no, have faith. Just reach out to the real editor.’
Compared to Conan O’Brien, his wife Liza Powel O’Brien has large and expressive eyes. He notices when she’s not entirely convinced by what he’s showing her because her eyes momentarily take on a somewhat sadder look. Given that the former Simpsons writer is one of the funniest individuals globally, I assume he’s only witnessed this expression from her a couple of times at most.
I find myself completely identifying with Kaitlin Olson’s internal struggle about whether her followers from Always Sunny and The Mick would continue to support her in a series that adheres closely to traditional network TV formats, as a weekly procedural. Despite my initial enthusiasm when the show was unveiled, I couldn’t help but ponder if her acting skills might become diluted by subpar dialogue and weak storylines.
Fortunately, it hasn’t been a concern for her at all. Olson manages to make even the most clichéd or exaggerated lines feel authentic and compelling. So she never had any reason to fret about the opinions of Rob McElhenney or anyone else. Though I can’t verify exactly how many of the 10+ million weekly viewers are dedicated fans of “It’s Always Sunny,” I’m confident that number is on the rise, and it will continue to swell as Season 2 approaches. (Take a peek at their charming banter when the show was renewed.)
