As a veteran actor who has graced both the silver screen and television with my presence, I have had the privilege of working with some of the biggest production houses in Bollywood, including Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films. My experiences with these two powerhouses have been quite intriguing, to say the least.
Filmmakers have frequently claimed that certain actors demand higher fees during discussions about entourage in Bollywood. Yet, Vikram Kapadia, an actor from “Kapoor and Sons” who has worked with all significant production companies, recently disclosed that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films offer smaller paychecks under the guise of providing work due to their well-known status. However, he also acknowledged that they consistently compensate actors promptly.
As a seasoned performer gracing screens in blockbusters like Force 2, The Night Manager, Kapoor and Sons, Scam 1992, and numerous others, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with esteemed production houses such as Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Now, I opened up about my journey working with these legendary studios that have been shaping the film industry since the 70s and delivering iconic films.
He discussed that even though actors face payment challenges, big production houses like Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms and Yash Raj Films pay on time. However, he also highlighted that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films have a sense of superiority complex over their legacy and establishment.
Consequently, they claim to provide slightly lower compensation under the guise of providing a chance to work at their esteemed film studio. He stated, “Yash Raj and Dharma have a sense of pride that we are Yash Raj and Dharma, so they pay less, but you should be content because you’re still getting paid. I believe they do this with everyone. That’s why actors seem worried.
On the other hand, he mentioned that Yash Raj Films compensated him generously and he had a positive work experience with them. Furthermore, he disclosed that they were always prompt with artist payments and never caused any payment-related problems.
Recently, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions struck a significant agreement. The filmmaker handed over half ownership of his production house to Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India (SII). Adar aims to broaden his involvement in the entertainment industry through his company, Serene Productions.
1976 saw the establishment of Dharma Productions, a film production company that was brought to life by Karan Johar’s father, Yash Johar. Over the years, they have created hit films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Agneepath, Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva, and many others. Upcoming projects include Shankara starring Akshay Kumar and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari featuring Varun Dhawan.
Contrarily, Yash Raj Films was established back in 1970 by none other than Aditya Chopra’s father, Yash Chopra. This film production company is renowned for creating movies such as Kabhie Kabhie, Mohabbatein, the Dhoom series, Sultan, and Pathaan, to name a few.
