As a dedicated movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours and hard-earned rupees on watching films at the cinema halls, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent comments made by Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar regarding the exorbitant food prices in these establishments.
Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar are two highly skilled directors who have collaborated with many prominent actors within the industry. Given their extensive experience, they offer valuable insights on various aspects of films, including production, actor fees, and more. Lately, they’ve voiced concerns about the steep food prices in movie theaters that may deter casual film enthusiasts from frequenting cinemas. As Karan Johar points out, a family of four could potentially spend around Rs 10,000 on a single day out to watch a movie.
In a talk with The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan Johar pointed out a trend: rising theater food prices are causing many people to watch fewer movies in theaters each year. He referenced a survey showing that out of 100 households, 90 said they would only see two films per year at the cinema. This group represents a significant portion of a filmmaker’s usual audience.
Karan pointed out that family members avoid visiting cinemas since it makes them uncomfortable when their children ask for snacks like popcorn, and they feel guilty refusing them. Instead, they find it more convenient to dine at a restaurant, as they only pay for the meal there, not for the movie ticket.
He also mentioned that parents often express their children request for caramel popcorn, but they don’t have the means to buy it because the typical cost for a family of four is around 10,000 rupees, which might not even be included in their financial planning.
The director-producer mentioned that financial constraints often prevent individuals from attending the cinema, and they might only do so during special occasions such as Diwali or if they learn about an extremely popular film like Stree 2 starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao.
Furthermore, Zoya Akhtar shared her thoughts, mentioning that many people are unable to visit cinemas even if they desire to, due to financial constraints. She stated that cinema enthusiasts who plan to go to theaters only twice a year would be carefully selecting the films they wish to watch. “Perhaps I can’t afford to watch Laapataa Ladies,” she commented to the media outlet. On the professional side, Karan is collaborating with Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina on their upcoming project titled Jigra.
