Karan Johar recalls taking classes to ‘sound like a man’, lied about it to father because of THIS reason

Karan Johar recently shared some very personal experiences, disclosing that he underwent vocal training for more than two years to deepen his voice and sound more masculine. In an open discussion with Raj Shamani, Karan reminisced about the challenges he faced due to his high-pitched voice, as people often advised him to speak in a deeper tone, saying “Your voice sounds like a girl’s… You need to speak with a deeper voice.

He confessed that he felt so mortified by it that he deceived his late father, Yash Johar, claiming he was enrolled in computer classes when in truth, he was pursuing something else. “I was incredibly timid to disclose this to him,” he acknowledged. “I felt a deep sense of embarrassment.

Karan Johar disclosed that during his younger days, he faced bullying not only because of his voice but also due to the way he walked and appeared. People often made fun of his behaviors, treating him unfairly for not conforming to traditional gender roles. However, his parents, particularly his father, were a steadfast source of love and encouragement. Johar referred to them as his “safe haven,” expressing that his dad would motivate him to dance freely and even recommended he pursue acting.

However, societal norms placed a significant burden upon him. Eventually, he enrolled in a public speaking course, where he was advised to alter his speech pattern. The tutors didn’t merely focus on his voice; they also attempted to modify his gait and overall demeanor. As Karan put it, the purpose of these classes was to make him appear more “manly” in both his speech and mannerisms.

Reflecting on the past, the director now realizes that was not the best method. He firmly asserts that no one should ever be asked to alter their identity in order to belong. Instead, he would tell others today, “Embrace who you are! If you naturally walk a certain way, keep doing it. If your speech is unique, then carry on. Never let anyone make you change yourself.

Regardless of the hardships he experienced in his youth, Karan established himself in the world of Bollywood and achieved great success. He started directing with the release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 and continued to create significant films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name Is Khan, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. His latest directorial project was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which premiered in 2023.
