Karla Sofia Gascón found herself choked up during conversations about potentially moving back to the U.S., expressing concerns that while Emilia Perez may become a cult classic, it seems that the global transgender community is losing its liberty and freedom.
The Oscar-honored actor chatted with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet during the Platino Awards in Madrid on Sunday evening, an annual event celebrating films and television from Ibero-America.
Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical about a drug cartel boss undergoing gender transformation, titled “La Familla,” was well-received at various film festivals, earning a best actress award for its stars Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez in Cannes. However, the momentum for Netflix’s leading Academy Awards contender took a turn for the worse when old, controversial tweets from Gascón resurfaced online.
I sincerely apologize for any pain I may have caused.
When THR asked if she might go back to the American film industry, Gascón responded in Spanish (which was then translated): “I’m excited about the prospect. What remains to be seen is if everything will be all right when I arrive in the U.S.
She went on, hinting at President Trump’s executive orders affecting transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals: “I can only hope it won’t come to this, but if I’m denied entry or prevented from working because they deem me unqualified or wish to discriminate against me based on my sexual orientation, then it will be a significant challenge.
I certainly hope this is true! I’m eagerly anticipating exploring countless opportunities within the U.S., as I believe it embodies a unique essence that many desire globally – freedom. Regrettably, it seems we’re gradually letting go of it.
Regarding the transformation in her life, Emilia Pérez stated: “Indeed, it’s been quite transformative. The movie, I feel, is destined to become a cinematic classic and potentially a cult film. This comes with an inherent sense of responsibility, especially given the events surrounding the film and transgender individuals.”

Emilia Pérez discussed how her life has been affected: “It’s been dramatically altered because this movie is shaping up to be a landmark in cinema history and could become a cult classic. This status naturally brings with it a significant sense of responsibility, particularly considering the events related to the film and transgender people.
She continued, “The importance of the situation seems more significant to me now, and I honestly believe I’m among the early casualties of all this hostility.
Besides discussing her upcoming projects, Gascón mentioned a few as well. One of them is an Italian movie titled “The Life Lift,” where she portrays a psychiatrist who represents both the devil and god. In Argentina, she has another film in the works, she shared with THR. She also mentioned a project based in Spain, and a French film that revolves around a blues singer trying to adopt a child from a refugee camp.
Latin America’s 12th edition of the Platino Awards take place Sunday night in Madrid, Spain.
