Karla Sofía Gascón Hopes Her Withdrawal From ‘Emilia Pérez’ Oscar Campaign Allows “the Film to Be Appreciated”

Karla Sofia Gascón is expressing her thoughts about being taken off the Emilia Perez Oscar nomination process, following the re-emergence of some contentious tweets she had posted in the past.

On Friday, the contending actress nominated for an Oscar spoke up on her Instagram, acknowledging director Jacques Audiard’s latest interview in which he revealed that he has ended his relationship with Gascón, as portrayed by Emilia Pérez in the movie.

After thoroughly understanding Jacques’ interview, I chose to let the movie speak for itself. I hope that my silence will enable the film to be recognized as a heartfelt tribute to love and diversity it represents. I deeply regret any pain caused during this journey, and offer my sincere apologies to everyone affected.” – Gascón.

Earlier this week, Audiard expressed to Deadline Hollywood that he hasn’t had any conversation with her and has no desire to. He further stated, “She seems to be on a self-destructive path that I can’t intervene in, and frankly, I don’t grasp why she persists. Why is she damaging herself? Why? I don’t comprehend it, and what I don’t understand about this as well is why she’s hurting people who were once very dear to her.

In a recent uproar, Gascón, renowned for her role as Emilia Pérez in the Academy Award-nominated movie, has faced criticism following the reemergence of old posts containing offensive comments and tweets that she had made on X (previously known as Twitter).

Afterwards, she has consistently expressed her apologies and attempted to clear her name from allegations of racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia. This includes a lengthy interview with CNN en Español this past weekend. Gascón is the first openly transgender individual to receive an Oscar nomination in any acting category.

Previously, The Hollywood Reporter stated that the actress is no longer part of the film’s Oscar campaign in the U.S., and she won’t be attending awards events in Los Angeles this week. There are rumors of tension between Gascón and Netflix, who hold the distribution rights for Emilia Pérez in the U.S., Canada, and the UK.
