Karla Sofía Gascón Is “Deeply Sorry” for Resurfaced Tweets: “Light Will Always Triumph Over Darkness”

On Thursday, Karla Sofía Gascón expressed her apologies over the contentious tweets that were brought to light by her followers on their morning scrolls.

As a fellow advocate, I feel compelled to address the discussions sparked by some of my past social media posts that have unintentionally inflicted pain. Being part of a marginalized community myself, I understand this anguish all too intimately, and I sincerely apologize for any distress I may have caused. Throughout my life, I’ve been dedicated to striving for a more just world. I remain hopeful that light will always prevail over the darkness.

On Thursday morning, Emilia Pérez’s name dominated the news as her past posts on the platform X (once known as Twitter) re-emerged, sparking a wave of controversy.

In two different posts on Twitter, Gascón expressed thoughts on the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and the Muslim community in her home country, Spain.

In the summer of 2020, she wrote that it appeared a man was falsely accused after using drugs, presenting a fake bill, only to be unjustly killed by a reckless officer. This tragic event led to the man becoming a symbol, while causing immense harm to his family, colleagues, and the police force. She believes that while many may not have cared for George Floyd, a man with a past of drug addiction and questionable activities, his death brought attention once more to the fact that some still view Black people as lacking rights and consider the police as brutal. This is an unfortunate reality.

Towards the end of that year, she wrote on Twitter, “It seems to me that there are increasingly more Muslims in Spain. Every time I collect my daughter from school, I notice more women wearing head coverings and longer skirts. It makes me wonder if we’ll need to switch from teaching English to Arabic next year.” (November 23, 2020)

Additionally, she proposed that Islam conflicts with European values and infringes upon human rights, advocating for its prohibition instead.

Emilia Pérez is at the forefront of this year’s Oscar nominations with a total of 13, including a best actress nomination for her role in Gascón. This marks the first time an openly transgender actress has been honored in this way. In another post on social media, Gascón expressed her thoughts about the 2021 Oscars ceremony where ‘Nomadland’ won the award for best picture: “It seems that the #Oscars are turning into a platform for independent and activist films more and more. I wasn’t sure if I was watching a Korean-African festival, a Black Lives Matter rally, or the International Women’s Day march. Other than that, it was an incredibly unfortunate gala.

On Thursday, several of Gascón’s posts mysteriously vanished from her account, leaving many baffled as to why they remained visible in the first place, given her ongoing Oscars campaign. The controversy deepens following Gascón’s statement in a Brazilian newspaper interview that malicious online forces are attempting to tarnish her and the Emilia Pérez team. “I find it distasteful when social media teams, working for these individuals, seek to undermine our work, including mine and my movie,” she stated. “It’s counterproductive. You don’t have to belittle someone else’s achievements to elevate your own. I’ve never spoken ill of Fernanda Torres or her movie. Yet, some members of the Fernanda Torres team are tearing down Emilia Pérez and me. This says more about their film than mine.
