Karla Sofía Gascón Set to Attend Oscars After Resurfaced Tweet Controversy

Emilia Pérez’s co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, will be present at this coming weekend’s Oscars, following the uproar over her past problematic tweets that have recently resurfaced.

As I, a lucky gamer who’s also an actress, I’ll be jetting off to the glittering Academy Awards! I’m honored to be nominated in the best actress category, and it’s all thanks to the fantastic team at Netflix who released “Emilia Pérez” back in November. They’re taking care of my travel expenses, as they usually do for their Oscar-nominated talent. It’s just another aspect of the special treatment studios give their nominees – a tradition I’m more than grateful to be part of!

Gascón, the groundbreaking openly transgender woman who’s been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category, has been relatively absent from public view lately and missed out on attending the SAG Awards on Sunday. At this event, where she was recognized as a nominee for Best Actress and her ensemble was also up for the award for Best Movie Cast.

Gascón expresses his uncertainty about his feelings, but is thankful for being back, as he shares with THR on Monday. He’s grateful to everyone who has supported him – Netflix, the production company, and his fellow team members. This marks the end of a beautiful yet challenging journey that started three years ago.

This year, Gascón was basking in the limelight as the lead actress in Emilia Pérez, a film with 13 Oscar nominations, more than any other contender. However, she has been embroiled in controversy lately due to resurfaced tweets from years ago that contained racially insensitive comments about Black people, immigrants, and Islam. Gascón has apologized for her past remarks and recently announced that she would recede from the film’s Oscar campaign, allowing it to shine on its own merits.

This month, it was previously announced that Gascón wouldn’t travel to the United States from her home country of Spain for several scheduled engagements, which include the AFI Awards luncheon on February 6th, as well as the Critics Choice Awards and PGA Awards over that same weekend.

Emilia Pérez pursues the title character, Gascón – the cartel’s head honcho – as he recruits the undervalued attorney, Rita (Saldaña), for an undercover operation. The objective is to orchestrate a staged death for Emilia, allowing her to begin anew and authentically express her female identity.

Page Six was first to report that Gascón is set to fly to L.A. to attend the March 2 ceremony.
