Karla Sofia Gascón Speaks Out After Shocking Oscar Loss

After a quiet period following the Oscars this year, Emilia Pérez’s co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, has spoken up about the events leading up to the awards. Following her unsuccessful bid for the Best Actress trophy, tweets from journalist Sarah Hagi reportedly affected Gascón’s chances of becoming the first openly transgender actress to win an Oscar, with the award ultimately going to Mikey Madison for her performance in Anora instead.

By the deadline, Gascón opted for confrontation at a recent event to publicize her forthcoming autobiography titled “Lo que queda de mi” or “What’s Left of Me“, choosing to claim she was “less racist than Gandhi” rather than admitting remorse for past actions and taking the more respectable route. In regards to her attempt at winning an Academy Award, she asserted that the odds were already unfairly against her from the outset.

It seems evident that someone waged a persistent attack on me, and they didn’t stop until they achieved their goal.

Gascón remains unapologetic about her previous social media posts, which criticized various topics including Islam and the death of George Floyd. She stated, “There’s no need for anyone to forgive me for anything.” If someone feels bothered by actions she may have taken in her life, she encourages them to speak up directly with her. In an interview reported by El Mundo, Gascón added:

As a movie lover, I feel compelled to clarify some misconceptions about myself. I’ve never identified with labels like far-right or racist. Quite the contrary, I’ve spent my life standing up against such ideologies. When I was younger, I even clashed with skinheads who espoused those beliefs. Whenever someone questions me, I often find myself asking: “But why do you take offense at me?”, and more often than not, they struggle to provide a clear answer or explain their grievances.

More to come…
