Kathy Bates’ Matlock Gets a Unanimous Verdict on Rotten Tomatoes

Kathy Bates' Matlock Gets a Unanimous Verdict on Rotten Tomatoes

As a movie reviewer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the revamped version of “Matlock” featuring the legendary Kathy Bates is not to be missed! This gender-swapped reboot has already garnered a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and if you’re anything like me who puts stock in such scores, it’s worth giving it a spin.

If you feel that TV already has an overabundance of legal dramas, you might want to set aside some space for the new show “Matlock“, starring Kathy Bates. As it stands, this series boasts a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This modern take is a reinterpretation of the 1980s show with the same name, featuring Andy Griffith in a later stage of his career. There’s no connection to the original series, and unfortunately, given that Griffith has passed away, there’s no possibility of him making a cameo appearance.

In Kathy Bates’ portrayal, we find a standalone performance that should definitely catch your attention if you value Rotten Tomatoes ratings. The character Matlock, played by Bates, makes a comeback in her 70s. The first episode premiered on September 22, but the second one is scheduled for October 17. For those who enjoyed the pilot, there’s a bit of a wait for more. However, with the rest of the season consisting of 18 episodes, it seems likely that there will be more to look forward to if the Tomatometer rating stays high and the audience continues to support it.

If you’re a fan of the lead actress on CBS’ Matlock, there’s a strong chance you’d want the show to carry on. Initially, Kathy Bates expressed her intention to retire from acting after this role, but she later clarified her remarks, implying that there might be a possibility of her returning.

It Might Not Be Over For Bates After Matlock

At 76 years old, Kathy Bates is more towards the end of her professional journey than the start, but it seems her career might not be wrapping up just yet. Despite suggesting that her role in ‘Matlock’ would mark the end, she recently told Deadline at the Emmys that she has no plans to retire. However, before taking on ‘Matlock’, Bates did mention she was contemplating a semi-retirement.

I had been considering semi-retirement, but then I received the Matlock script from Jennie Urman, which made me reconsider.

I’ve always been captivated by the remarkable journey of this talented actress. Spanning over decades, her career has been nothing short of extraordinary, with memorable roles in blockbuster films and acclaimed TV shows that have left a lasting impact. She earned an Oscar for her riveting portrayal in “Misery,” a Stephen King adaptation, and brought the Unsinkable Molly Brown to life in “Titanic,” a movie that once held the title of highest-grossing film of all time, before being surpassed by “Avatar.” Beyond the silver screen, she has graced our TV screens with her presence, playing Jo Bennett on “The Office” and featuring prominently in multiple seasons of “American Horror Story.” In essence, she’s delivered numerous unforgettable performances.

Despite her age not hindering her pace, Bates has managed to churn out four films between 2023 and 2024, along with her prominent role in Matlock. While enthusiasts may be hoping for another season of American Horror Story, it might be premature to get too excited. She last graced our screens in 2018’s Apocalypse, which translates to a gap of four seasons since then. Although there’s always a chance she could reappear, it seems she might need to balance two TV shows simultaneously if that happens.

Matlock airs on CBS and streams on Paramount+. Episode two airs on October 17.
