Katy Perry Urges Young Artists to “Stay True to Yourself” After She Performs Medley of Greatest Hits, Accepts Video Vanguard Honor

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for music and celebrity news, I must say that witnessing Katy Perry’s VMA Video Vanguard performance felt like a nostalgic journey through my gaming timeline. Her medley of hits took me back to the days when I was leveling up my avatar in various MMOs, blasting her tunes on full volume as I conquered virtual worlds.

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Katy Perry received the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Prior to Perry’s Video Vanguard performance, Orlando Bloom spoke warmly about his longtime companion’s achievements. “I fell in love with her as Katy Perry; I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson,” the actor expressed. “To the world, she is a global sensation who infuses love, radiance, and humor into each song and music video she produces. To me, she is a mother, a partner who shares that same love and happiness within our family.

He went on to say, “At times when we’ve felt most down, her music and the enchanting universe she constructs have brought us a wave of happiness and amusement, captivating people from every corner of the globe. She pours out love with such sincerity that it’s hard not to be drawn in. I can see this compassion reflected everywhere – in our home, in her passion for her craft, and most notably in her affection for her fans. Well done on this achievement, sweetheart! I couldn’t be more proud of you.

Later, Perry descended from above the stage wearing a modern outfit, kicking off a mix of her most popular songs, including “Dark Horse,” “E.T.,” “Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Girls,” “Lifetimes” and “Fireworks.” Additionally, she offered a sneak peek at their upcoming collaboration, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” which she performed alongside Doechii on stage.

After her act, Bloom walked up to the stage with the gleaming Moon Person statuette in hand. He and his partner shared a quick kiss before exchanging the award for the prop butterfly that Perry had used during her performance. The singer joked about who was taking care of their child, and Bloom replied, “I thought you were.” Then they both left the stage.

Wow!,” Perry expressed. “On my very first day, I made that exact same mistake! Can you imagine?” She appreciated MTV for “supporting my quirks from the start and aiding artists in expanding their creative realms.

As a gamer embarking on my own journey towards a lengthy and prosperous gaming career, I realize that success doesn’t just happen overnight; it requires countless factors to fall into place. It’s no accident that I’ve been able to keep going for this long – it’s been two decades of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

The performer openly expressed her affection for her family, emphasizing that they are the “strongest foundations” she’s aware of. “We may not always see eye to eye,” she said, “but isn’t it remarkable how even our disagreements can be filled with love.” Furthermore, Perry conveyed her appreciation for her early beginnings on MySpace, Warped Tour, and the various past locations where she discovered her voice, identity, and a supportive community at an early stage.

Beyond expressing gratitude, Perry also acknowledged her friends, admirers, the LGBTQ community, whom she considers essential to her existence, and Bloom for maintaining her humility and appreciation. She further praised Bloom for tasks as simple as doing the dishes. Lastly, she dedicated a special mention to her daughter Daisy, stating that she is the only bouquet of flowers Perry will ever require.

The pop star ended her speech with a powerful message encouraging fellow artists to stay true to themselves. “I’m excited when I look around music today and I see all the amazing, young artists who are operating with confidence, agency, vulnerability and authenticity,” she said. “I’ve heard a lot of, ‘Do this. Don’t say that. Wear less, wear more now. Hey, don’t cut your hair.’ One of the biggest reasons why I’m here right now is I learned how to block out all the noise that every single artist in the industry has to constantly fight against, especially women.”

Perry went on, expressing sincerely, “It’s crucial to remain authentic to yourself and your craft at all costs. Disconnect from social media when needed. Prioritize your mental well-being. Take a break. Feel the earth beneath your feet. And carry on doing what you were meant to do, just as I am.

The vocalist concluded her talk by mentioning that her new album, titled “143“, will be released on the coming Friday, specifically September 20th.

Perry has now earned her sixth VMA award, making it her first time back at the awards show since 2017. Since her debut in 2008, this pop sensation has notched up 14 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, with nine of them reaching the top spot.
