In recent times, Ke Huy Quan, who gained prominence again due to his Oscar-winning portrayal in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, expresses his conviction that Hugh Jackman is the ideal choice to embody Wolverine. Quan, who was a stunt coordinator in the initial X-Men film, believes Jackman was destined for the role, having played it for nearly 25 years now.
On Josh Horowitz’s podcast “Happy Sad Confused”, Quan showcased to promote his newly launched film, titled “Love Hurts”. During the conversation, he also discussed how his professional journey took an unexpected turn following his Oscar win in 2024. After being a prominent figure in the ’80s Hollywood scene, starring in movies like “The Goonies” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, Quan opted to step out of the limelight and focus on behind-the-scenes work as a stunt coordinator and choreographer.
In his own words, it was through this method that Quan helped cast the first-ever X-Men film, where he collaborated with Jackman. He describes the newcomer, who took on the character of the metal-clawed superhero for the first time in Hollywood, as a perfect fit for the role.
Right off the bat, since the onset, once we demonstrated the steps, he proved exceptionally adept and required minimal tutelage. His remarkable physical aptitude was evident; all that was necessary was for him to grasp the steps.
My task was to demonstrate the dance routine to him. However, everything he executed – each punch, every move – was flawless. It’s as if he was destined for this role. That’s why he looked exceptional. Yet, I can’t claim responsibility for his skills. He’s the one who deserves the credit. We merely provided the choreography.
It’s Hard to Imagine Someone Other Than Jackman Playing Wolverine
Jackman wasn’t always supposed to play Wolverine inX-Men. That part was meant for Dougray Scott, the actor famous for films likeRipley’s Game, Ever AfterandMission: Impossible 2. After signing up, Scott had to be replaced becauseMission: Impossible 2 went over schedule, and also because he was injured while shooting a motorbike scene. Other performers who were also considered were Russell Crowe, Viggo Mortensen and the Misfits’ singer Glenn Danzig.
Initially, Crowe recommended a friend to director Bryan Singer for the role of Wolverine, suggesting Hugh Jackman. Although Jackman had limited film experience at that time, he proved to be an ideal choice. Over the past 25 years, Jackman has portrayed the character in ten films (not counting cameos). Last year, Jackman reprised his role as the superhero in Deadpool & Wolverine, and it was believed that this would be his final appearance. However, many thought that Logan, released in 2017, marked the end of Jackman’s tenure as Wolverine. Despite concluding the character’s storyline, he returned for Deadpool’s latest movie.
It’s challenging to envision anyone else stepping into Wolverine’s role at the moment, as Jackman has embodied the character so perfectly with his unique physicality and grumpy demeanor. Although there are veteran actors who continue to take on action roles, Jackman understands that he won’t be able to portray Wolverine indefinitely, perhaps until he reaches 90 years old.
