Despite the finale of “John Wick: Chapter 4” suggesting a conclusive end to the storyline for the titular assassin, making it seem unlikely that there will be a “John Wick 5”, Keanu Reeves isn’t ready to retire from this character just yet. The summer lineup for 2025 movies features “Ballerina”, which is set before the third and fourth “John Wick” films, allowing Reeves to encounter Ana de Armas’ Eve Macro. However, it’s not only “Ballerina” that Keanu Reeves has on his action-packed agenda; news has also surfaced that the adaptation of his comic book series “BRZRKR” has enlisted the services of Justin Lin, who is renowned for his work in the Fast & Furious franchise.
The filmmaker Lin, known for directing four films in the Fast & Furious series (he was initially involved with the fifth one, Fast X, but stepped down during filming), has been chosen to helm the upcoming movie adaptation of BRZRKR. This project was announced back in 2021, following the commencement of the 12-issue comic book series by Boom! Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin will also produce this Netflix production alongside Keanu Reeves through his Perfect Storm banner, as well as Stephen Christy for Boom! Studios, Stephen Hamel from Company Films, and Ross Richie.
Despite not having worked together in a movie previously, Justin Lin and Keanu Reeves have now come together professionally. This was initially through Reeves investing in Lin’s recent film, Last Days, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Now, they will collaborate more closely on an intense action movie based on a comic book series that Reeves himself founded. Mattson Tomlin, who wrote the script for The Batman: Part II, is also penning this film’s screenplay and will oversee a spinoff anime series as its showrunner.
As a passionate movie buff, let me share my thoughts on BRZRKR – an enthralling tale that follows B, a unique character who’s both mortal and divine, having walked the earth for an astonishing 80,000 years. This immortal warrior is driven to perpetual violence, often at the expense of his mental wellbeing. According to Boom! Studios and Netflix, this gripping narrative unfolds as B grapples with his eternal existence and the relentless pursuit of peace that seems ever-elusive.
As an eternal wanderer across the globe, I’ve stumbled upon a sanctuary: serving the U.S. government in their most perilous conflicts. In return for my services, they promise me the one prize I’ve yearned for all these centuries – the truth behind my unending life marred by bloodshed, and the key to terminate it.
As a passionate cinephile, I can proudly say that I played a part in crafting the epic comic book series, BRZRKR, alongside Matt Kindt. The incredible Ron Garney brought this masterpiece to life with his captivating illustrations. This was followed by the enticing Bloodlines spinoff, delving into B’s past adventures. Fast forward to July 2024, and I had the pleasure of contributing to another intriguing tale – The Book of Elsewhere, a gripping narrative that unfolds in an alternate universe from our main BRZRKR storyline.
With Justin Lin now attached to the BRZRKR movie, we can anticipate its production process to accelerate and perhaps start sooner rather than later. It’s exciting to think that Netflix subscribers might get to witness Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of his creation on the big screen sooner. In the meantime, Ballerina is set to hit theaters on June 6.
