Keanu Reeves Offers Hopeful Update About Constantine 2, And I Hope James Gunn Is Listening

As a long-time fan of both Keanu Reeves and DC Comics, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “Constantine 2” since the first movie came out over a decade ago. The original film, despite initial criticisms for its differences from the source material, has become a cult classic in the world of comic book adaptations. So when news broke that a sequel was finally in development, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

Prior to playing the title role in “John Wick,” Keanu Reeves portrayed the character of John Constantine in “Constantine.” Initially, fans and critics found issue with Keanu’s interpretation, deviating from the original comic book source material. However, over time, this film evolved into a cult favorite, leaving many eagerly anticipating the long-awaited arrival of Constantine 2.

Over the past few months, there’s been relatively silent news about the movie following its initial announcement. Yet, in a recent interview on The Late Show with Steven Colbert, Keanu Reeves shared some exciting updates. He expressed gratitude to the host for contributing to the sequel’s progression. Though Constantine 2 isn’t gearing up for filming just yet, Reeves assured us that the script is being actively developed.

The nos started to become a maybe which became a kinda yes… and right now waiting on a script.

As a dedicated gamer and an eager fan of DC movies, I’ve been anxiously awaiting news about the upcoming Constantine script. However, it seems that the wait has taken longer than any of us could have imagined. Director Francis Lawrence recently revealed that last year’s writers’ strike was a major contributing factor to this delay in the script’s development. So, here we are, still eagerly anticipating the next move in bringing Constantine back to life on the big screen.

Akiva Goldsman is currently developing the script for “Constantine 2” and additionally handling the screenplay for the new “I Am Legend” film featuring Michael B. Jordan. Given his current projects, Goldsman’s schedule is quite busy. While both Goldsman and Keanu have indicated that work is underway, it remains unclear how advanced each script is in the writing process.

As a longtime fan of both Constantine and DC Comics, I can tell you this news has me absolutely thrilled! With James Gunn currently working on the highly anticipated Superman movie, which is already one of the most looked-forward-to films in the 2025 lineup, it’s an exciting time for us comic book enthusiasts. Moreover, this marks the beginning of a new DC Universe on the big screen under Gunn’s direction – a dream come true for many fans like myself who have longed for authentic and engaging adaptations of these beloved characters.

As a gamer and fan of the DC Universe, I believe there’s room for creativity even with stand-alone movies like ” Constantine.” While it didn’t initially fit into the new DCU, we’ve seen how projects like “Peacemaker” Season 2 can be adapted and made part of the expanding universe. So, why not consider bringing “Constantine 2” into the fold as well? After all, the possibilities are endless in this ever-growing gaming world of DC!

There needs to be a dialogue between James Gunn, DC Films’ leader, and the Constantine production team about the best approach for portraying these characters. This discussion is currently underway.

Despite being labeled an “Elseworlds” film and not directly connected to the broader cinematic universe, the upcoming “Constantine 2” project is an exciting prospect as it brings a long-planned production to life. The absence of a completed script at this stage leaves room for possibilities, such as Tilda Swinton’s potential involvement, despite her previous statements about not being involved due to lack of communication. Casting discussions are unlikely to take place until the script is finalized.
