Keanu Reeves Questions The Matrixs ‘Red Pill’ Becoming an Alt-Right Meme

Keanu Reeves Questions The Matrixs 'Red Pill' Becoming an Alt-Right Meme

As a long-time fan of Keanu Reeves and his iconic roles, I was intrigued to read about his recent interview with The Guardian regarding the political interpretations of “The Matrix.” Having grown up watching Reeves’ action-packed performances, I’ve always admired the depth and complexity of his characters. In this particular film, Neo’s journey from an ordinary man to a hero willing to take the red pill and face uncomfortable truths resonated with me on a deeper level.

Keanu Reeves, the cherished Hollywood figure and renowned action star, has commented on the “alt-right” interpretation of his blockbuster film, The Matrix. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he was asked about this political faction’s adoption of the movie as a symbol, with the concept of “red pills” representing the acceptance of harsh realities. However, Reeves is not overly enthusiastic about this usage.

In the film, Morpheus, the freedom fighter leader, presents Neo, played by Reeves with a dilemma. He offers him two pills: one red and one blue. The blue pill would make Neo safely return to his bed, while the red pill would initiate his enlightenment and reveal the truth about the depths of the situation around him.

“Hmmm. That doesn’t seem appealing to me, but who am I to judge? After all, it’s art. Perhaps I don’t fully understand. People can interpret it in their own ways and make something of it.”

Although people may have diverse perspectives on art, it’s clear that Reeves expresses disapproval towards the manipulation of “The Matrix” by specific political factions. The phrase “take the red pill” has been adopted by groups such as the alt-right, conspiracy theorists, men’s rights activists, and far-right organizations to challenge liberal values. However, it is essential to note that Lilly Wachowski, the creator and director of “The Matrix,” has publicly rejected this interpretation. In 2020, Elon Musk encouraged his followers to “Take the red pill,” and Ivanka Trump responded with her acceptance. Nevertheless, Wachowski made it clear that she did not support their usage by simply replying “F*ck both of you.”

Lilly Wachowski Has Addressed the Idea of The Matrix as a Trans Allegory

For supporters of the alt-right who find solace in “The Matrix” and its symbolic “red pill” moment, their interpretation may seem oversimplified as the film is increasingly seen as a representation of trans experiences. This perspective, which resonates positively with trans community member and co-director Lilly Wachowski, who together with her sibling and fellow director Lana Wachowski, has publicly transitioned.

As a cisgender person who has had the privilege of not experiencing gender dysphoria or the complexities of being trans, I can only imagine the depth and complexity of the experiences shared by the creators of “The Matrix.” Their words resonate deeply with me as they describe the underlying themes of transformation and identity that permeate the film.

It’s unlikely that the film’s director confirming the trans themes and rejecting the “red pill” interpretation would change the minds of those deeply entrenched in the alt-right movement regarding “The Matrix.” Previously, Reeves, who was unaware of the allegory at the time, expressed his approval of the idea as being “cool.”

“I’ve never discussed that topic with Lilly. She hasn’t shared her thoughts on it with me. I find the Matrix movies thought-provoking, and I believe many people can relate to them in various ways. It’s intriguing to me that Lilly has come forward to express her perspective.”

A new Matrix film is being made by director Drew Goddard as part of the five-part series. Simultaneously, Keanu Reeves has numerous upcoming projects. He’s set to reprise his role as John Wick in Ballerina, act in the comedy Good Fortune, collaborate with Jonah Hill on Outcome, and voice Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
