Before I became the admired dog-loving assassin known as John Wick, my reception from critics and the audience was far from favorable. However, it’s clear now just how exceptional an actor and action star I truly am, a fact that wasn’t immediately recognized, as evidenced by the poor reviews of my 2008 crime thriller. Remarkably, this very film has since found success through streaming platforms.
Directed by filmmaker David Ayer, known for his work on “Training Day” and “The Beekeeper”, the action-packed thriller titled “Street Kings” is captivating audiences. In this movie, Keanu Reeves plays a mourning police officer who resorts to violence and alcohol consumption after losing his wife. Joining him on screen are Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans, Common, The Game, and Keanu Reeves himself. Currently, “Street Kings” is gaining popularity and can be found within the top 10 selections on the free streaming platform, Tubi. For more details about this gripping storyline, take a look at the official synopsis for the thriller provided below.
Tom Ludlow, an experienced LAPD officer (played by Keanu Reeves), is grappling with the loss of his wife and struggling to find meaning in a confusing world. However, when clues suggest he might be responsible for the death of a fellow officer, Ludlow starts doubting the allegiance of those around him.
There Was a Time When Keanu Reeves Was Panned Far More Than He Was Praised
For many years, Keanu Reeves has enjoyed a highly successful acting career, thanks to his memorable roles in films like “Bill and Ted”, “Speed”, “Point Break”, and the “Matrix” series. However, there was once a period when critics often criticized him for being too wooden and lacking on-screen charisma. Today, with Hollywood’s newfound appreciation for Reeves, it seems hard to believe that he was ever so harshly judged. A look at the reviews for “Street Kings” offers a distorted glimpse into a time when Reeves received far more criticism than accolades.
Initially, the film “Street Kings” received mixed reviews. It garnered a 37% rating from critics and a slightly better 58% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian was particularly critical, describing Keanu Reeves’ performance as devoid of depth and interest. On the other hand, Brian Rentschler of Screen Rant felt that despite Reeves’ questionable portrayal of a police officer (comparable to Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood), it didn’t greatly impact the movie. However, the film suffered more from significant plot holes and inconsistencies in its narrative, which were so large they could fit a big truck.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that there were some who didn’t find “Street Kings” entirely satisfying. Ian Nathan of Empire described it as “another gritty, violent film with Keanu Reeves delivering a solid performance, but Ayers doesn’t compare to Curtis Hanson.” Kirk Honeycutt of THR put it simply: “The action was fast and the characters were strong.” In hindsight, it could have been much worse, as evidenced by the direct-to-video sequel “Street Kings 2: Motor City,” which seems to miss Keanu Reeves’ presence significantly.
In more straightforward terms, after achieving massive success with the “John Wick” series, which significantly boosted Keanu Reeves’ career and earned him widespread acclaim from both viewers and critics, it seemed like the story might have reached its conclusion with “John Wick: Chapter 4”. However, Jenefer Brown, an executive at Lionsgate, has confirmed that a fifth installment, titled “John Wick: Chapter 5”, is currently being developed.
Our world keeps expanding at an amazing pace. Coming soon is our first spin-off movie titled Ballerina, which we’re excited to share with everyone. In addition, we’ve confirmed that the fifth John Wick film is in production. I believe there will be more spin-offs and possibly a TV series, even a video game, in the future.
