Keegan-Michael Key Explains The Origins Of That Hilarious Key And Peele Joke That Ended Up In Transformers One

As a lifelong fan of both Key & Peele and Transformers, this movie was a delightful fusion of two worlds I never knew I needed. Keegan-Michael Key‘s wit and charm were perfectly showcased in his role, and the A-A-Tron reference was the cherry on top of an already amazing experience. It’s clear that the writers and directors have a deep appreciation for the duo’s work, which makes me hopeful for future collaborations.

Without doubt, the renowned comedy series “Key & Peele” is often quoted extensively among fans, to the point where well-loved skits like “I said motherf*****” and “A-A-Ron!” are repeatedly cited. It’s likely that Keegan-Michael Key, one half of the comedy duo, might be tired of hearing these catchphrases by now. However, when the producers of “Transformers One” presented him with a script that echoed one of the most celebrated skits from the show’s four-year tenure, he agreed without a second thought.

In our conversation about “Transformers One”, I needed to mention the part where his character presents a malfunctioning robot called “A-A-Tron”, a nod to the well-known “Substitute Teacher” sketch from their show. When I wondered if there were any other references from “Key & Peele” in the movie that I might have missed, he shared this:

What you see isn’t spontaneous; it was planned ahead in the script. They included it as an “Easter egg” before I joined the cast, but I believe they anticipated I would perform it and later added it to the script. As far as I can recall, there aren’t any other instances like this one. The last time something similar occurred wasn’t within this production; it was for a different project altogether. That’s the only time I remember a Key & Peele allusion being made.

It’s smart to tailor a project to an actor’s career background to attract them! In this movie, the character Key portrays is a preliminary version of the well-known Transformers character, Bumblebee, who goes by B-127 initially. Since we hear a lot of alphanumeric names in the early stages of the film, A-A-Tron is a clever nod and fits seamlessly without feeling forced. If you haven’t seen the “A-A-Ron” sketch for a while, let me refresh your memory: it’s a reference to the actor!

Regarding another project with a nod to “Key & Peele”, I’m not entirely clear on what Keegan-Michael Key might be referring to, but it could potentially be “Toy Story 4”. In the movie, he and Jordan Peele voiced Ducky and Bunny respectively. Although their jokes weren’t as overt as “A-A-Tron”, they leveraged the popularity of “Key & Peele” in promotion. Unfortunately, since the show ended, they don’t seem to cross paths much, and both have experienced career shifts. However, I’m optimistic that Key could star in a horror film directed by Peele someday. For now, here’s a throwback to the “Toy Story”/”Key & Peele” crossover trailer!

From a passionate fan like me, I can’t help but give a thumbs up to Transformers One! This action-packed movie has both fans and critics raving, and it’s not hard to see why.
