Keith Urban to Headline CBS Music Competition ‘The Road’

CBS‘ upcoming music competition series The Road has found its top-billed act.

As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Keith Urban, a country music legend, is headlining a tour with the unique twist that up-and-coming acts are his openers on select dates! The excitement doesn’t stop there – it’s up to us, the audience, to decide who keeps touring alongside him and who heads back home. I can hardly wait to be part of this incredible musical journey!

The TV series titled “The Road” is set to debut on CBS this fall, having been developed by creators Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan.

In my youth before I was legally allowed, I frequently played in less-than-desirable bars, often for the bartender’s sake. This idea of testing artists within real-world settings to see their true potential really appeals to me. Earning your stripes might be unpleasant, but there are aspects of this profession that can’t be learned in a classroom, such as creating a set list, deciding whether to prolong or shorten a song, and engaging with the audience. For me, touring has always been my primary passion. It’s where theory meets practice. However, it’s the only path if you aspire to be a performer.

The contestants of Urban’s show and he himself are set to perform at various small and mid-sized venues in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee throughout March and April. The grand finale will take place at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Tickets for these performances will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, free of charge.

Urban has quite a history with music competitions, serving as a judge on ‘American Idol’ during its final four seasons on Fox in the 2010s. He returned as a guest mentor on ‘Idol’ (now airing on ABC) in 2023, and for three cycles, he took on the role of coach for the Australian version of ‘The Voice’.

MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, and the production company Lucky Horseshoe Productions by Shelton and Lee Metzger are collaborating on a project titled “The Road“. Sheridan, David Glasser from 101 Studios, as well as Shelton and Metzger, serve as executive producers.
