Kelsey Grammer Told Us How Jonathan Frakes Convinced Him To Appear On Star Trek: The Next Generation

As a gamer with a deep-rooted affection for both sci-fi and sitcoms, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement when reminiscing about Kelsey Grammer’s brief yet memorable stint in the Star Trek universe. Grammer’s portrayal of Captain Morgan Bateson in “Cause and Effect” was more than just a cameo; it was an opportunity to step into the shoes (or uniform, rather) of a character with a rich history intertwined with that of Captain Kirk himself.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Kelsey Grammer is undeniably synonymous with Frasier Crane from the beloved shows like “Cheers,” “Frasier” (both the original spinoff and its revival, available on Paramount+), and the latest installments. However, it’s worth mentioning that this esteemed actor has an impressive resume in genre roles as well.

As a die-hard fan, I recently chatted up Grammer about his stint on Frasier Season 2, where he teamed up with his co-star from Back to You, Patricia Heaton, along with Peri Gilpin’s character Roz Doyle. During our conversation, I couldn’t resist bringing up his brief appearance as Morgan Bateson in The Next Generation Season 5 episode “Cause and Effect.” This was the sole time this actor donned the Star Trek uniform for this character. Naturally, I asked if there had ever been any discussions about him reprising Bateson in another series or project, to which he revealed:

[Laughs] As far as I’m aware, he’s quite popular at those conventions these days. Interestingly enough, I did participate once, and I even signed some autographs under Captain Morgan Bateman. However, it was Jonathan Frakes who piqued my interest. He contacted me while I was at Cheers, and asked if I would join them for a show. I wasn’t sure, so I asked about the details. He said, ‘Well, he’s a contemporary of Captain Kirk.’ That’s what convinced me. So, I got to wear the same uniform they wore in the original Star Trek, which made me extremely happy.

Star Trek Displayed Valuable Artifacts from The Next Generation at SDCC, and the Feelings I Experienced Upon Seeing Them were Overwhelming.

A Surprising Next Generation Character Was Revealed For Star Trek: Section 31, And I’m So Stoked

In this instance, the storyline unfolds as follows: The crew onboard the USS Enterprise-D finds themselves entangled in a time paradox where they repeatedly collide with the missing Federation ship, the USS Bozeman, which vanished 90 years prior. With each recurrence, the senior staff members experience a sense of déjà vu and gradually uncover the situation. Eventually, they devise a strategy to avoid the collision, thereby ending the time loop. At the episode’s conclusion, Kelsey Grammer’s character, Morgan Bateson, appears, oblivious to the passage of nearly a century. However, the narrative ends before we witness Captain Jean-Luc Picard informing him about the elapsed time.

In this role, Kelsey Grammer got to don the same style of uniform that Captain James T. Kirk and other Starfleet officers wore during the period between “The Wrath of Khan” and the prologue of “Generations,” roughly speaking. This aspect was a major attraction for Grammer when Jonathan Frakes pitched the role, as he found it intriguing that Morgan Bateson worked alongside Captain Kirk’s character. Unfortunately, no other chances arose for Grammer to reprise Bateson, but the character did appear in a silent cameo in the “Star Trek: Lower Decks” episode “Grounded,” where he led the team that vindicated Carol Freeman, captain of the USS Cerritos.

Re-experience Grammer’s short stint in the Star Trek universe by watching “Cause and Effect” on Paramount+, a platform essential for keeping abreast of Dr. Frasier Crane’s recent adventures. Coming up next within the Star Trek realm is the fifth and final season of Lower Decks, with its first two episodes airing on October 24.
