As a die-hard Kendrick Lamar fan who’s been following his journey since Section.80, I can confidently say that this man never ceases to amaze me. The “squabble up” video is yet another testament to his creativity and innovative spirit. From the pulsating beats of Debbie Deb’s classic sample to the satirical vignettes in the green room, it’s a visual feast that perfectly complements Kendrick’s dynamic flow.
Following the unexpected release of his album titled GNX, Kendrick Lamar has now unveiled the video for track two, “Squabble Up.” This energetic production incorporates the vocals of Debbie Deb, providing ample space for Kendrick’s expressive delivery to shine. The video direction, filled with action, is the work of Calmatic, a frequent collaborator of Kendrick, who hails from Compton.
Throughout the entire video, a mystical green room is filled with only a crystal chandelier hanging overhead. As the song continues, Kendrick Lamar raps from the center of a turning stage backdrop showcasing comedic scenes involving various extras participating in different activities such as moshing, street brawls, posing dramatically, and even holding a candlelit vigil. One notable prop among many is a book that Kendrick brandishes titled “How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies” – maybe a playful jab at another rapper.
