Kendrick Lamar discussed his musical clash with Drake on Apple Music, revealing that his strategy during their encounter stemmed from a competitive spirit and determination.
During a chat with Ebro Darden and Nadeska Alexis before his Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, Dot discussed the “rap feud” that made headlines last year. He explained, “From the start, I wanted to maintain it as a competitive sport. The way people may perceive it as a collaboration is fine too, but I enjoy seeing artists get tough. I still follow battle raps, from Murda Mook to Lux to Tay Roc, even my brother Daylyt. This competitive spirit has always been at the heart of who I am, and it’s been that way since day one.
He went on to explain, “I believe we didn’t have a specific style for this year; it was just an ongoing evolution.” Lamar also commented, “Regarding this year, I feel that many people shifted their focus away from rap, and the raw, aggressive edge seemed to fade. This influenced my approach when creating any type of music.
The artist made it clear that he wasn’t taken aback by his actions since he’s consistently remained authentic to himself. He added that those who have been in his circle over the last 20 years could vouch for his talents. “It’s just a continuation of what I’ve been doing at Carson studios, in friends’ garages, with my TDE comrades or simply anyone within Compton,” he expressed.
