Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn Have a ‘Scandal’ Reunion at DNC

As a fervent fan of the captivating political drama “Scandal” and a devoted supporter of the Democratic party, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn were announced as hosts for the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Their on-screen chemistry as Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant was electrifying, but their real-life political activism is truly inspiring.

Enthusiasts of the show “Scandal” were thrilled everywhere as the Democratic National Convention revealed that Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn were to be part of the weekly roster of Hollywood hosts for the upcoming week.

In the TV show “Scandal,” created by Shonda Rhimes for ABC, the characters portrayed by these two actors were frequently shown to be close to the White House due to their roles as Olivia Pope (a D.C. fixer) and President Fitzgerald Grant. Over seven seasons, they shared the screen together. Interestingly, off-screen, both of these actors have become outspoken advocates for the Democratic Party in real life.

Goldwyn is slated to be the host for the opening ceremony, while Washington prepares to host the closing event on a night when Vice President Kamala Harris will formally receive the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

After a gap of three nights, there was uncertainty if a Scandal reunion would happen. However, on Wednesday, which marked the third night of the DNC, the previous co-stars found themselves both at Chicago’s United Center and decided to fulfill their fans’ desires by reuniting. As Washington put it, they gave the people what they asked for.

Notably, they both exchanged Instagram Story posts featuring their respective snaps, and Washington later posted those special instances down below.

In addition to Washington and Goldwyn, Mindy Kaling and Ana Navarro were selected to take charge of separate nights during the four-day event held in Chicago. During their assigned evenings, they started the prime-time transmission with introductory speeches and made appearances at various points throughout the evening.

Greg Propper, who has long advised celebrities such as Washington on social impact matters and was chosen by the Harris campaign to coordinate Hollywood endorsements, recently discussed the campaign’s strategy for utilizing stars to support Harris with The Hollywood Reporter. Following President Joe Biden’s declaration that he would be stepping down from the ticket, Propper noted that “within the next 48 hours, there was a significant surge of enthusiasm among individuals in the entertainment and creative sector for Harris’ presidential bid.” However, Propper emphasized that “this campaign will not be driven by celebrities. It will be a grassroots movement. The vice president wants to ensure that everyone is included.”

2018 marked the beginning of Washington’s collaboration with Propper and his company, Propper Daley, based in Los Angeles. In 2020, she took charge of a virtual Democratic National Convention (DNC) event that was held on Zoom. Speaking to THR, Washington expressed her views about her role: “This isn’t merely about political candidates and election cycles; it’s about constructing a future where everyone realizes their influence and their power within our democratic system.”

Meanwhile, the influential figure behind UnPrisoned, has been actively showcasing her engaging exchanges with audiences and backstage moments on social media. She recently posted a picture featuring Wednesday’s unexpected speaker at Hollywood, Oprah Winfrey, and filmmaker Ava DuVernay. On Thursday, she expressed excitement about the upcoming main event by posting, “Three Black women eagerly waiting for @KamalaHarris to step in and excel in her role,” which mirrors Michelle Obama’s witty remark during the DNC, aimed at Harris’ opponent, Donald Trump, and anticipating the events of Thursday.
