Kevin Costner Gives Blunt Response to Fan Outrage over John Dutton's 'Yellowstone' Death

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a lifetime of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Kevin Costner‘s journey with “Yellowstone” and his upcoming project, “Horizon: An American Saga,” is nothing short of extraordinary. The man is a true visionary, unwavering in his pursuit of the stories he wants to tell.

The absence of “Horizon” director, who departed, continues to resonate, as Season 5B unfolds, with the continuity of John Dutton’s storyline confirmed. With the character’s demise, it seems that the franchise has closed its doors for the “Horizon” director, and some viewers attribute his departure as a factor in the series not meeting expectations during its final stages.

At the 2024 Governors Awards, Costner shared a straightforward, unbothered perspective regarding fan reactions to his departure from the E! News series. In essence, he seemed unfazed by the backlash. He stated:

“Fans have a voice in things, and they choose to follow stuff.”

As a die-hard fan, I must admit, the demise of John Dutton took me aback. Even though there were whispers of his departure, I clung to the belief that he might miraculously return to the ranch. Yet, it seems Kevin Costner had always been contemplating the dramatic exit of our beloved patriarch. He mentioned that he’d previously proposed ideas on how his character would meet his end. Unfortunately, it appears he was not part of the decision-making process when the final call was made. Here’s what he shared:

“They do what they want to do. That’s fine with me.”

Although the outcome for his character in “Yellowstone” has been decided, there remains the question of “Horizon: An American Saga” for the actor. Though the second installment of this four-part Western series is yet to be widely distributed, Costner’s focus at present is on securing funds for the third and fourth films that will conclude his vision. In a recent statement about the project, he was vague, expressing uncertainty by saying:

“I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make it, and then I’m going to make the fourth one. And if you want to say “the end” at that point, then that’s the end. It’s my own private UFO. I’ve seen it, and I will never forget it, and I chase it as long as I can. … I will figure out a way to bring you 3 and 4, because you’ve gone to 1, and you’re gonna go to 2, and we’re all gonna go west together.”

It appears that, no matter what challenges arise, Kevin Costner will complete his journey with Horizon. It’s unlikely that there’s any part of him that regrets his ambition and leaving Yellowstone sooner. Instead, Costner is a man who has firmly decided to create the movie he desires, one he’s committed to seeing through to its conclusion, even if it takes longer than anticipated.
