Although “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” isn’t among the greatest ’90s movies, it stands out as one of Kevin Costner’s top retro films. What makes it even more intriguing is the fact that Costner and his stuntman allegedly foraged for magical mushrooms before filming a sword fight scene in the 1991 production. Now, I can’t wait to rewatch this fascinating scene!
While chatting with GQ, the actor and filmmaker shared the wild mini-saga that happened between him and a Robin Hood coworker while the rest of the cast and crew were out for lunch. The Bodyguard alum explained, that he was asked casually if he wanted to go looking for mushrooms in the nearby field (Costner mentioned the infamous field appears in the opening credits with a few boys running through it). Then, he recalled the conversation he had with the stuntman about going on this quest, saying:
In a fascinating turn of events, I found myself drawn to a character who took on the role of a daring stuntman portraying a young lad. He casually mentioned, “Hey, there’s some enchanting mushrooms hidden out in this field,” and with a sense of curiosity, he asked, “Fancy joining me for a search?” Without hesitation, I replied, “Absolutely, let’s embark on this adventure together.
Pondering over how movie and TV set members might utilize their free time, I find it hard to envision activities like foraging as common. While the cast of “Dazed and Confused” indulged in mushroom consumption together and visited a shooting range, such experiences seem rare among workers in this field.
In the aftermath of playing “Dances with Wolves,” the actor immersed himself in an extraordinary journey, pointing out that he and another individual were the sole seekers of the mysterious mushrooms. He additionally mentioned that his stunt double fared better during this expedition, elaborating on their contrasting experiences:
After discovering the fifth one, I called out, “Nick!” I asked, “How are you doing? I’m searching, by the way, how are you finding these mushrooms?” He replied, “You need to try one and it will show you where the rest are.
While they were searching for magical mushrooms, it was an amusingly apt conversation between them. It struck me as curious when Costner seemed unsuccessful, whereas his companion had already discovered five, making me question whether there were indeed any magic mushrooms to be found.
As I embarked on this journey, it suddenly occurred to me that I’d be engaging in a sword fight with Alan Rickman just an hour later, and given the circumstances, I decided to withdraw from the task. I explained my reasons for doing so.
I realized, ‘I’m not eating a mushroom, Nick. Instead, we’re going to have a sword fight, Nick. Have you eaten any mushrooms? Because in about an hour, we’ll be fighting with swords.’
It appears everything fell into place as we’re just discovering the story now. But, I must rewind and watch the sequence that followed this exhilarating escapade on film.
All in all, this tale is quite engaging and manages to distract me from missing Yellowstone without John Dutton and Costner’s comments on the show’s ending. Furthermore, it serves as a suggestion to revisit some of his classic Western films and movies from earlier in his career.
Due to this wild tale about Kevin Costner searching for enchanting fungi alongside a stuntman during the filming of “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, my queue of rewatches is expanding significantly. Rest assured, I’ll be keeping a keen eye on that sword fight scene now.
You should too, as Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is available with VOD.
