Kevin Costner Struggling to Finance ‘Horizon’ Chapter 3 & 4 But Will Complete Western Saga

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has seen more Westerns than I can count on one hand, I must say that Kevin Costner‘s determination to bring his vision for “Horizon – An American Saga” to fruition is nothing short of admirable. The man’s unwavering commitment to his art is akin to a modern-day Paul Bunyan, carving out a path through the wilderness of Hollywood with sheer will and perseverance.

The actor has outlined his vision for his upcoming Western project and is resolute about completing its four-part saga no matter the challenges. His decision to leave his role as John Dutton in Paramount’s Yellowstone before its final episodes caused quite a stir, ultimately resulting in his character being written off in the premiere of Season 5B. One major factor behind this exit was to allow him to focus on creating his own Western production titled Horizon – An American Saga.

Initially, the initial Horizon film premiered in cinemas during summer. The plan was to debut its sequel two months afterward. However, due to less-than-impressive reviews from critics and lower box office earnings in June, Warner Bros., the distributors, decided to postpone the release of the second movie, which was originally scheduled for August. This move aimed to give Chapter 1 an opportunity to build an audience through its streaming premiere first. As of now, it remains uncertain if this approach has been successful, as while Chapter 2 had a showing at the Venice International Film Festival in September, it still lacks a confirmed general release date.

Currently, Kevin Costner is heavily engaged in the production of “Chapter 3”, however, due to a lack of funding, he was compelled to pause filming. In a recent appearance at the Deadline Contenders Los Angeles panel, he shared insights about the project’s current status.

“I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make it, and then I’m going to make the fourth one. And if you want to say “the end” at that point, then that’s the end. It’s my own private UFO. I’ve seen it, and I will never forget it, and I chase it as long as I can. … I will figure out a way to bring you 3 and 4, because you’ve gone to 1, and you’re gonna go to 2, and we’re all gonna go west together.”

Kevin Costner’s Horizon Has a Huge Challenge Ahead

Besides the persistent financial hurdles faced in producing Horizon, Costner’s most significant obstacle lies in his personal drive to present his comprehensive vision unaltered on screen. Similarly, Francis Ford Coppola experienced a significant financial setback at the box office with his ambitious project Megalopolis. Unlike Costner, however, Coppola had only one movie to fund and bring to life when others refused to invest in it.

Costner finds himself in a predicament with his four-part series, having pledged to narrate the entire story, regardless of the financial or time implications. Although his unwavering convictions deserve respect, this commitment doesn’t make the journey any less challenging, particularly as he seems to be grappling with finding funds for two more films in the series.

At the moment, “Horizon – An American Saga: Chapter 1” can be found streaming on Max, and it’s anticipated that an announcement regarding the release of “Chapter 2” will be made soon since it’s still believed to be slated for some time in 2024.
