Kevin Costner has never been hesitant about creating films that resonate with him deeply, and his affection for Westerns culminated in his most cherished endeavor – a project he has downplayed as not being such a thing. With blockbuster hits like “Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range” under his belt, Costner’s latest tale stretches the definition of epic with its four-part narrative scope. Unfortunately, the initial movie’s poor performance at the box office has made it a costly venture. Nevertheless, Costner remains steadfast in his support for his film, even going so far as to claim it among the “most significant films of the year” in recent interviews.
It’s understandable that the film is progressing given Costner’s persistent belief in the grand endeavor, which he describes as a multi-part saga detailing America’s westward expansion. However, bringing Horizon to this stage has been quite challenging. The production of the movie has been nearly as tumultuous as the events it portrays, with financial troubles, delays, and not forgetting the much-discussed upheaval surrounding Costner’s exit from Yellowstone. Additionally, rumors suggest that Costner personally invested around $100 million to ensure the film’s production.
As a dedicated cinephile, I must share that one challenge we initially faced with our project was locating the perfect setting for what others labeled an “old-school Western saga.” Surprisingly, numerous studios hesitated to invest in this venture, given the current discerning tastes of moviegoers who are selective about which films they choose to watch on the big screen. Unfortunately, our cinematic wager with ‘Horizon’ didn’t yield the desired returns during the previous summer season. However, it found a niche on streaming platforms, and this success has given us renewed hope as we prepare for the release of ‘Horizon Part 2.’
At the North American premiere of the upcoming film, Kevin Costner stood firm when speaking with Decider:
It’s intriguing to note that this film was released six months ago, yet it continues to be discovered with minimal promotion. It seems to have found its place. It’s thriving among the top films of the year and has been streamed more times than them. This suggests to me that audiences are eager to explore new emotional and intellectual territories.
Can ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2’ Win Over the Box Office?
The second part of “Horizon” seems poised to stir up as much controversy among critics as its predecessor did. It initially premiered in Europe back in September, garnering mostly unfavorable reviews. However, more recent critiques have offered a brighter perspective. Despite the mixed opinions of the critics, it’s ultimately the viewers who decide the film’s financial success. The success of “Horizon Chapter 2” will hinge on whether those who watched the first movie via streaming are intrigued enough to catch the sequel in cinemas.
Kevin Costner’s statement that “Horizon” is among the “largest films of the year” on streaming may not persuade those undecided, but it certainly indicates his unwavering enthusiasm for the production. Although some predict that streaming services might lead to the demise of cinemas, if “Horizon” experiences a revival this year, then platforms like Max and Netflix will have played a significant part in its success.
There’s a significant amount of anticipation surrounding the release of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” as it could demonstrate that there are still compelling stories set in the Old West to be told, especially amidst speculation that future films might become Netflix exclusives.
