As a longtime admirer of Kevin Costner’s illustrious career, I must say that his latest endeavor, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” has certainly been a rollercoaster ride. The film’s initial box office performance was akin to watching my favorite team lose the big game, but the recent surge in streaming popularity has brought a sense of triumph that rivals winning the World Series.
In a surprising turn, Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” has claimed the number one spot on Max’s movie chart, following its underwhelming performance at the box office. The Western genre film, which has sparked much debate, is currently dominating headlines due to the recent news about Costner leaving the Paramount-produced “Yellowstone” franchise. However, Costner’s decision to step away from Taylor Sheridan’s successful TV series seemed puzzling when his new movie, “Horizon,” turned into a massive box office bomb that overshadowed even the infamous flop, “Waterworld.”
Currently, the initial installment of Kevin Costner’s anticipated four-part series is enjoying its time in the limelight. It has swiftly claimed the number one spot on Max’s movie chart and seems to have found a dedicated audience. With relative ease, it outperformed another struggling box office contender – George Miller’s Furiosa – A Mad Max Saga. The strong streaming launch of Horizon might just be the boost Costner needs to attract viewers to Horizon – Chapter 2 in theaters.
Originally, Costner had intended for the second installment to be playing in cinemas by now, but the modest global earnings of $34.4 million for Chapter 1 led to the postponement of its August 16 theatrical release. Warner Bros., however, chose to delay the cinema screening and expedite the streaming debut of Chapter 1, in the hope that a successful Max run would generate more interest in watching the sequel in theaters. Whether this strategy will prove effective remains uncertain until a definite release date for Chapter 2 is announced.
Horizon Chapter 2 Will Premiere in September
At the moment, no release date has been announced for “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2”. It’s possible that Warner Bros. is still deciding when to put the film out following its lost August slot. However, it’s also plausible that the studio might be waiting to see how much attention and interest “Chapter 1” garners in the upcoming weeks on Max before setting a release date for the sequel.
Regardless, Kevin Costner’s upcoming “Horizon” film is scheduled for its premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival on September 7. There, both the director and star of the movie are hoping for a more favorable response from critics. Although the debut of “Chapter 1” at Cannes Film Festival received a standing ovation, online reviews were more like a quiet desert town than the wild west. However, these reviews contained a glimmer of optimism – no pun intended. While some found the setup of the first movie to be lengthy and slow, many compared it to the initial chapters of a novel, setting high expectations for “Chapter 2” to offer something more energetic.
At present, it remains uncertain how Costner’s grand schemes for his masterpiece will unfold, but with an estimated $100 million of his personal funds invested in the project, he fervently hopes that the premiere of Horizon, particularly its debut film Max, will serve as the catalyst his Western series has been seeking. Production for Chapter 3 of the franchise is already underway.
