As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the impending arrival of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is as exhilarating as a mutant’s powers being unleashed for the first time!
Ever since Disney completed its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, fans have been thrilled about the prospect of mutants and the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, thanks to the head of Marvel Studios, we’ve got a clue as to when these beloved characters will step into the spotlight. Fox had control over this property for numerous films since the release of 2000’s X-Men, and while they produced some excellent movies, seeing the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels like it will pave the way for even more compelling stories to unfold. While there have been subtle hints about the X-Men and mutants in recent MCU releases, there’s been no definitive timeline on when they would make their grand entrance. With The Fantastic Four, Marvel’s First Family, finishing production on their first MCU appearance, the Marvel honcho has given us a glimpse into when the X-Men will soon follow suit.
At a live virtual event, Disney APAC Content Showcase via Deadline, Kevin Feige, Marvel’s mastermind, talked about the upcoming developments in the MCU and hinted at when audiences could expect to see X-Men characters on the big screen. He mentioned that familiar X-Men characters will appear in forthcoming films, with their stories significantly unfolding after the 2027 release of “Avengers: Secret Wars.
You’ll notice that our upcoming films will continue featuring some familiar X-Men characters. Following this, the narrative of Secret Wars sets us on a path towards a new era for mutants and the X-Men – it’s like a dream come true, as we’re bringing back the X-Men once more.
2020 marked the end of the Fox-produced X-Men film series with the release of The New Mutants. While the series finale was somewhat anticlimactic after the divisive reception of X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019, it’s worth noting that the X-Men franchise had some strong titles under Fox’s watch. Among them were X2: X-Men United, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan, which are often praised as among the top comic book movies in recent memory. However, inconsistency in quality was a recurring issue for the brand during its Fox era. Now, with their transition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s hope that this issue will be addressed.
The Stage Has Been Set For the Arrival of The X-Men in the MCU
Although the X-Men haven’t fully appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) up until now, the franchise’s Multiverse Saga has enabled characters from the Fox-produced X-Men Universe to show up since Disney took over Fox. The most notable instance of this is Ryan Reynolds portraying Deadpool, which made it possible for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to reappear in Deadpool 2. This marks the largest X-Men-related return to the MCU thus far and is expected to play a significant role in their future storylines.
In addition to the X-Men who have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evan Peters reprised his role as Quicksilver, with a surprising change in WandaVision, having previously played the character in X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Furthermore, during the Multiverse Saga, Patrick Stewart made a brief appearance as Professor Charles Xavier in Phase 4’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, this wasn’t the same Professor X that fans are familiar with, but rather a version of the character from Earth-838.
A subtle indication about the potential appearance of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) surfaced when Kelsey Grammer reappeared as Hank McCoy, aka Beast, at the end of 2023’s film “The Marvels.” Previously, Grammer portrayed this character in the 2006 movie “X-Men: The Last Stand.” In this latest film, after Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) repairs a tear in the universe caused by Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), she finds herself stranded on the other side. She is later reunited with an alternate version of her mother and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, suggesting that mutants and the X-Men may soon be joining the MCU. We eagerly anticipate what lies ahead in this exciting development!
