As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has me more excited than a kid in a candy store! After years of waiting and false starts, it’s finally happening – Marvel’s First Family is joining the MCU.
I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Marvel’s First Family next year when “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” graces our screens. It feels like a long-awaited dream coming true, considering the IP was previously owned by 20th Century Fox until Disney took over the studio in 2019. Boasting an incredible cast of top-tier performers, there’s no denying that fans have plenty to look forward to when it comes to the Fantastic Four – including the moment they officially join forces with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And as for when we can expect this crossover, Kevin Feige has a plan in place.
At the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore (as reported by Deadline), during a live virtual event, Feige expressed his enthusiasm for Marvel’s First Family. Interestingly, he was wearing a Fantastic Four cap, and when asked about which upcoming Marvel project he was most eagerly awaiting, he pointed to the hat itself. It was then that he disclosed that fans can anticipate seeing more of this team after the movie “First Steps” premieres in theaters next summer.
At last, the Fantastic Four are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Filming concludes next week, with the film premiering the following summer. These characters will then seamlessly transition into the subsequent Avengers films, which has me thrilled about the future of this iconic team!
Upcoming Avengers films under discussion include “Avengers: Doomsday,” featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Dr. Doom, and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” These movies are scheduled to hit theaters in 2026 and 2027 respectively. This means that fans can look forward to three consecutive years of watching Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach bring their Fantastic Four characters to life on screen. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” marks the beginning of Phase Six in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, signaling a fresh start for this popular franchise.
The Fantastic Four Has a Rocky History on the Big Screen
The path of the Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a protracted one. Prior to the 20th Century Fox films, there was an economical attempt in 1994, produced by Roger Corman and never officially distributed. Although bootleg versions are available online, they offer some kitschy entertainment, but they’re not representative of the intended debut for the brand, and are generally regarded as a project that primarily served to keep the property’s license active.
In 2005, Tim Story helmed a movie adaptation of the Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox with Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Julian McMahon in the leading roles. Despite some unfavorable reviews from critics, the film was a commercial success, earning $333.5 million worldwide on a production budget of $100 million. The 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, faced even harsher criticism and, although it managed to make a profit with its $130 million budget, its global gross of $301.9 million fell short compared to its predecessor.
2015’s Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank and featuring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell, faced numerous troubles during and post-production. The studio expressed disappointment with the initial version of the film, leading to reshoots. Upon release, it received negative reviews, and Trank distanced himself from the theater version, blaming Fox for its creative shortcomings. Financially, it underperformed, grossing only $167.9 million against a production budget of $120 million.
As a fan eagerly awaiting the return of Marvel’s iconic team, I can confidently say that all indicators suggest “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be a much-improved take on the series, rectifying past cinematic pitfalls. The film, directed by Matt Shakman, who masterfully handled the critically acclaimed Disney+ series “WandaVision,” promises to be in capable hands. Moreover, the stellar cast includes Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. However, the ensemble is bolstered further by the addition of seasoned actors like Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles.
