As a hardcore Marvel fan and avid gamer with over two decades of experience following the MCU, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the upcoming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” With Phases 4 and 5 introducing an impressive roster of new heroes, it’s a thrilling time to be a part of this universe.

According to Kevin Feige, the upcoming “Avengers” films number 5 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will be large-scale productions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, not every character from this universe will make an appearance in these movies. With the Russo brothers potentially returning as directors for the next Avengers installments, there’s much excitement surrounding the intricacies of the upcoming crossover event.

After the monumental crossovers of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” which brought together the MCU’s most iconic heroes like The Avengers, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy into one epic tale, it falls to a new production to continue in their footsteps.

Due to the large scale of Phases 4 and 5, there have been questions about how the upcoming Avengers films will incorporate the various heroes from the previous stories.

During an interview with Gizmodo, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared that not all Avengers characters will appear in the upcoming two-part Avengers film. However, he assured fans this doesn’t mean these characters have been written off permanently. Feige cited Tim Blake Nelson’s reprisal of his role as The Leader, first seen in The Incredible Hulk over a decade ago, as evidence that Marvel Studios keeps the door open for character returns.

As someone who has spent years in the fast-paced world of film production, I understand the realities of storytelling and the importance of making tough choices. Absolutely, I don’t usually make sweeping statements like “never” or “always,” but I get it – in the context of creating a compelling narrative for the Avengers series, there simply isn’t room for every single character to make an appearance. With limited screen time and a vast roster of heroes, we have to prioritize who will advance the plot and resonate with audiences. It’s not about permanently retiring characters or saying goodbye forever – it’s all about the narrative flow and what serves the story best at that moment in time. And who knows? Tim Blake Nelson might pop up again in a future project, or one of our lesser-known heroes could become a fan favorite and earn a bigger role down the line. So while we may not see every character in every installment, their absence doesn’t mean they’re gone for good.

In phases 4 and 5, a number of fresh heroes have emerged on the scene, including She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Ms. Marvel, Echo, and several others. Notably, Sam Wilson assumes the role of Captain America, while Shuri takes over as the Black Panther. With such a diverse cast, which characters might feature prominently in the upcoming Avengers film?

Approximately 60 characters have been hinted to appear in the upcoming film. Potential surprises may include Hercules from “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Clea from “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and Starfox from “Eternals,” who were teased in after-credit scenes. The Eternals, due to the film’s divided reception, and Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight are possible absentees.

Jeff Loveness, who initially penned the screenplay for what was then titled “Avengers 5” and known as “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” previously stated that the X-Men and Fantastic Four were excluded from his script. However, it’s uncertain if this is still true since Loveness isn’t working on the movie anymore. There’s a possibility that the Fantastic Four won’t feature in the fifth Avengers film but could make an appearance in “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The Thunderbolts and Guardians of the Galaxy may not play major roles in the upcoming Avengers project, as there’s no news regarding the next instalment of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” a new team was introduced, but considering James Gunn’s involvement with DC Films now, Marvel Studios might be planning to give those characters a break.

In the grand scheme of the Avengers saga, characters such as Agatha Harkness and Echo may not take center stage in major films. However, they are expected to continue playing significant roles in the more intimate storylines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Multiverse Saga faces a major issue that was absent in the Infinity Saga. Marvel’s approach of producing only Avengers films as grand conclusions to each phase, rather than wrapping up individual storylines as they used to, results in a feeling of fragmentation among the projects.

Without a solid Avengers lineup, it’s uncertain which characters will lead the franchise forward. A fresh dynamic among newcomers such as Shang-Chi and She-Hulk, as well as veterans like Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel, has yet to be explored.

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve grown attached to the Young Avengers and their unique dynamics. The cliffhanger ending of “WandaVision” left me wondering: will these young heroes join the main Avengers team in their next adventure, or will they get their own film?

The fifth installment of “Avengers,” titled “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is set to premiere in theaters on May 7, 2027, following the release of “Avengers” on May 1, 2026.
