Kevin Feige Suggests Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 Will Not Be Directed by Jon Watts

As a die-hard Spider-Man fan, I’m both excited and a little sad about the news that Jon Watts is likely stepping down as director of the next installment in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man saga. Watts has done an incredible job bringing Peter Parker to life on the big screen in the last three movies, and it will be bittersweet to see someone else take the helm. However, I understand that directors’ schedules can get busy, and Marvel Studios needs to keep moving forward.

According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who spoke with CinemaBlend about the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it seems that the next installment of Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man” franchise, titled “Spider-Man 4,” may undergo a significant shift. Previously suggested changes were hinted, and it appears that a change in directors is most likely. Jon Watts, who helmed the previous films, is reportedly unavailable due to schedule conflicts.

Feige has been discussing various Marvel projects in the pipeline, and there’s buzz surrounding the next installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man saga. Despite the apparent conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was never the true end for Holland’s character in the MCU. Following rumors of Spider-Man 4 in production, Feige has now confirmed a significant change for the upcoming film – a new director will helm the project.

“Jon has made three exceptional Spider-Man movies that we cherish. Currently, he has numerous commitments which may prevent him from continuing in this role. Consequently, we might need to find a new person for the job.”

It’s uncertain if anything is set in stone, as directors have frequently left projects due to creative clashes and production delays. However, it appears that Watt’s Spider-Man trilogy will mark his final involvement with the franchise for the time being. This aligns with Watt’s earlier statements about departing from the franchise this year.

There are Many Spider-Man Projects Coming to Screens Soon

Fans of Spider-Man in the MCU may have to wait a few more years for the next live-action film, but they won’t be left without new content. An animated series titled “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is upcoming, marking the first project with Marvel’s iconic hero directly connected to the MCU timeline. Although Tom Holland will not lend his voice for the character, Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin are set to return in a story that unfolds before “Captain America: Civil War.” This could be an intriguing “What if” scenario.

Outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sony is set to carry on its Spider-Man franchise with the upcoming films “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter,” scheduled for release this year. They aim to move past the underperformance of their previous attempts like “Morbius” and “Madame Web.” Additionally, Nicolas Cage will bring a unique take on the superhero in the upcoming live-action series “Spider-Man Noir,” now confirmed to be streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Alongside these developments, Sony is set to carry on its hit animated Spider-Verse film series with “Beyond the Spider-Verse.” This upcoming movie aims to build upon one of Sony’s recent successful solo Spider-Man projects. The initial release date for this film was scheduled for 2023, but production delays have postponed its debut indefinitely, with a predicted arrival around 2025.
