Kevin Kline’s Hilarious Comeback: Is ‘American Classic’ the Show We’ve Been Waiting For?

For over 14 years, the amusing voice of Kevin Kline has occasionally graced the animated sitcom “Bob’s Burgers.” His unique and refined voice fits his snobbish landlord character, Mr. Fischoeder, perfectly and often brings laughter. However, in live-action scenes, Kline is primarily known for his dramatic prowess, particularly in recent series like “Disclaimer.” Although he has delivered powerful dramatic performances since 1982’s “Sophie’s Choice,” it’s always delightful to see him exercise his comedic talents on screen. Interestingly, MGM+ has announced an order for a new eight-episode comedy series titled “American Classic” starring Kevin Kline himself.

I’m thrilled to be a part of the team backing “American Classic,” a series that boasts the talented minds of Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin behind its creation. Michael is known for films like “Soapdish,” “Restoration,” and “The Last Station,” while Bob Martin has made his mark in the comedy world with the underrated masterpiece, “Slings and Arrows.”

Production-wise, Fifth Season serves as our studio, collaborating with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content. This promising series will premiere with eight episodes, setting the stage for an engaging viewing experience.

The esteemed Kevin Kline, who won an Academy Award for his role in “A Fish Called Wanda,” has been cast as Richard Bean, and Jon Tenney, known for his work on “The Closer” and “Scandal,” will play Jon Bean alongside him. Michael Hoffman himself will be directing the pilot episode.

In a nutshell, the story follows Richard Bean, a renowned theater director who is forced to revisit his past when he inherits a classic summer theater from an estranged family member. The series promises to delve into the world of theater and family dynamics, providing us with a compelling narrative.

The story revolves around Richard Bean, a renowned Broadway actor with a reputation for self-absorption, portrayed by Kline. After experiencing a major breakdown in public, he retreats to his hometown and the local theater that was instrumental in him recognizing his talent, which he had originally discovered there.

Upon my arrival, I was taken aback to find that my esteemed father, the ex-artistic director, seemed to have misplaced a few steps. The once-illustrious theater, now managed by my brother Jon, portrayed by Tenney, and his wife, who is now our town’s mayor, has transformed into a modest dinner theater offering roast beef and mystery dinner shows. Determined to restore the town’s glory, the luster of the theater, and save the world, I plan to revive a renowned American classic on this humble stage. The production will be directed by none other than Richard Bean himself, with yours truly as the leading actor.

Martin Hoffman, along with Ellen Fairey, function as executive producers, while Kline, Leslie Urdang, Anthony Bregman, and Miriam Mintz take on non-writing executive producer roles. Additionally, David Levine and Garrett Kemble from Anonymous Content, and Tenney serve as co-executive producers. Kevin Cotter will join as a co-producer. The production of the series is slated to commence in 2025, specifically in New Jersey.

“A Story About Art, Community, and Family”

Co-creators Hoffman and Martin expressed that their shared passion for theater and its enchanting characters, the true actors, has influenced them since childhood. They are thrilled to share a tale with fresh collaborators and esteemed veterans alike, such as the renowned Kevin Kline – a master of the stage and one of the world’s greatest comedians. To tell a story centered on art, community, and family is an opportunity they cherish; for them, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in the press release:

MGM+ caters to film enthusiasts, offering modern takes on timeless Hollywood tales. The series ‘American Classic‘ brings a touch of sophistication, mature characters, and an exceptional cast to the table, making it a perfect fit for our brand. Directed by Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin, with Kevin Kline in a leading role, this comedy is both laugh-out-loud funny and emotionally resonant. We’re thrilled to bring ‘American Classic‘ to our MGM+ viewers.
