Kevin Smith Reveals He’s Writing a Take On Rosemary’s Baby

As a cinephile who grew up in the 70s and 80s, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing that Kevin Smith is working on his own take on “Rosemary’s Baby“. Being a fan of both Smith’s work and the original Roman Polanski classic, this news is like striking gold for me.

While Kevin Smith might be known for View Askewniverse classics such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he’s also been known to dabble in horror from time to time. 2011’s Red State was his first foray into the genre, and while that one was a straight-up thrill ride, Tusk and Yoga Hosers crossed the line into horror-comedy territory. From the sound of it, Smith is ready to give things another try based on comments he made on a recent episode of his Fat Man Beyond podcast.

The podcast ran for an impressive 4 hours and 30 minutes, fittingly so since it was commemorating the digital launch of Smith’s new film, The 4:30 Movie. Throughout the discussion, several topics were covered, with Smith sharing his current favorite films. As a devotee of Rosemary’s Baby, he highlighted Apartment 7A, now streaming on Paramount+, as one he particularly enjoyed. It was during this appreciation that he disclosed he’s penning a screenplay, which he refers to as his own interpretation of “Rosemary’s Baby.”

Before we began the show tonight, I recently watched a movie called Apartment 7A. It stars Julia Garner and Dianne Wiest, and it’s a prequel to one of my all-time favorite films, Rosemary’s Baby. Inspired by this, I am currently writing my own take on the story, as I have always been fascinated by movies about satanic cults.

Smith would continue to lavish praise on “Apartment 7A,” describing it as a remarkable prequel that seamlessly complements the original. This assessment is indeed accurate, even in light of some critical opinions. Natalie Erika James’ work brilliantly mirrors Roman Polanski’s film, creating an unsettling atmosphere reminiscent of the 1968 classic while incorporating contemporary techniques to deliver a captivating movie from start to finish. Additionally, Garner and Wiest’s performances are so impressive that it wouldn’t be a shock if they were nominated for an award in the near future.

When Can We Expect Kevin Smith’s New Horror Movie?

Since Smith has shared that he’s still working on his adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby, we can expect it to take some time before it becomes reality. After finishing the script, he’ll need to gauge interest in the screenplay, secure funding, find a studio, cast the movie, and handle all the preliminary tasks before principal photography can even start.

Speaking of which, it’s been announced that his upcoming film features Jay and Silent Bob once more. Named “Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars“, the story revolves around their weed dispensary engaging in a battle with a competing business. In an interview with Will Sayre from MovieWeb, Smith described it as a “feud movie”, drawing comparisons to the classic “Spy vs. Spy” comic strip from MAD magazine, claiming that it’s genuinely humorous.

Originally, Smith aimed to start production this year, but recently announced a new release date for his “Jay and Silent Bob” movie: March 2025. This timeline aligns with the 30th anniversary of “Mallrats.” After that, we’ll see what unfolds. Perhaps he’ll complete his horror script by then and arrange production. Regardless of genre, we’re excited for more from Smith, as he’s undeniably one of our favorite directors.
