Tucked away amidst the verdant slopes of Pong Ta Long, a scenic 3-hour drive from Bangkok’s city center, lies the recently debuted Khao Yai Art Forest – an inspiring 210-acre artistic haven where nature and creativity harmoniously intersect. This venture, spearheaded by Khao Yai Art, aspires to revolutionize Thailand’s artistic landscape by offering expansive, fertile spaces for artistic expression through grand commissions, site-specific installations, and exhibitions.
Following two decades in Hong Kong, Marisa Chearavanont, an arts benefactor and initiator of Khao Yai Art, relocated to Thailand in 2019 with aspirations to bolster the nation’s support for the arts and enhance its artistic institutions. Shortly after her return, she discovered a distinctive location; captivated by its historical depth and personality, she conceived an “art forest” as a form of cultural rejuvenation or “reforestation project.
In her conversation with ARTnews, she shared, “During our trips to Hong Kong for auctions, we rarely encounter works by Thai artists. It seems to me that the Thai artists present are not appropriately valued. I aim to leverage my resources to grant Thai people access to international art and assist our local artists in gaining recognition beyond Thailand.
The first collection of installations showcases a variety of perspectives from both Thai and global artists. Reflecting the organization’s dedication to nature, tranquility, and personal wellness, permanent exhibits feature Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog Forest, Francesco Arena’s massive stone sculpture named GOD, Ubatsat’s earth-inspired work called Pilgrimage to Eternity, and the Martin Kippenberger tribute piece, K-BAR, by Elmgreen & Dragset – creators of Prada Malfa. Moreover, artworks by Louise Bourgeois, Richard Long, Richard Nonas, and Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook can be found dispersed throughout the forest.
