Plot:
The narrative unfolds around Madhuri, affectionately known as Madhu (played by Monika Panwar), a young lady who migrates to Delhi after a harrowing event left deep scars within her. Guided by the advice of her friend Bella’s partner Nakul (Gagan Arora), she settles into a budget women’s hostel, unbeknownst to her that the room assigned to her carries a dark past. Unwittingly, she discovers that the hostel inhabitants, many of whom do not work and rarely leave the premises, exhibit an icy demeanor towards her. They subtly warn Madhu about her haunted room, causing her great unease.
With an increasing number of unusual incidents taking place at the hostel, Madhu finds herself facing forces far stronger than herself. A peculiar middle-aged man known as ‘Doctor’ (Rajat Kapoor), who possesses supernatural talents, discovers that a troubled spirit haunts the premises. The narrative unfolds as Madhu grapples with her past traumas and bravely battles the specter, while Doctor employs all his skills to make sure the spirit departs from the hostel.
Over the eight episodes, we delve into Madhu’s relationship with her romantic interest, Arun (played by Abhishek Chauhan), and also uncover the reasons behind her decision to depart from Gwalior.
What Works for Khauf:
Khauf distinguishes itself within the congested horror genre with its psychological emphasis, placing it above ordinary supernatural offerings. Unlike numerous horror series that rely on jump scares or conventional tropes, Khauf skillfully integrates Madhu’s past traumas with the enigmatic occurrences in her dorm room. The show’s narrative is both haunting and strikingly human. The series effectively generates an unsettling atmosphere, thanks to its exceptional cinematography; whether it’s the gloomy hostel corridors or the oppressive room.
Khauf’s personal trait of being fearful is a key asset; Madhu’s emotional wounds lend depth to the story. They make her journey understandable and her fear tangible. The show skillfully combines psychological distress with supernatural terror, leaving viewers in doubt about what’s factual and what isn’t. This blend makes Khauf an intense viewing experience.
What Doesn’t Work for Khauf:
Khauf delivers exceptionally well in creating an atmospheric feel and exploring character psychology, but occasionally falters with its pacing and wrap-up. The series seems to drag a bit during some of the mid-episodes. Certain plot elements, like the hostel’s violent history, are intriguingly presented at first, yet they seem to lack consistency with the high-stakes nature of the show. Lastly, while the supernatural aspects are genuinely terrifying, there are instances where it leans on well-worn horror-drama clichés. However, these shortcomings do not significantly detract from the overall viewing experience.
