As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for unraveling the backstories of my beloved screen icons, I find myself utterly captivated by Kieran Culkin’s tale of innocence and ignorance during the making of the iconic Christmas movie, Home Alone.
Among the beloved Christmas films, it’s hard to beat the charm of “Home Alone”. It’s filled with family-friendly humor, offers touching messages about faith, family bonds, and youthful determination. However, interestingly enough, even the actor who played a key role in the film, Kieran Culkin, admitted that when he first watched it, he was just as confused as the rest of us – despite being part of the cast!
In a film called Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin played the character Fuller when he was eight years old, which coincidentally matched the age of his onscreen brother Kevin McCallister, who famously thwarted a burglary attempt by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern after accidentally being left at home while the rest of the family went to Paris. Interestingly, Fuller played a role in Kevin’s predicament, as he didn’t want to share a room with his bed-wetting cousin, causing an argument between him and his mother that led to him being sent to sleep in the attic. Kudos to Kieran, I suppose, for not being potty-trained!
At 42 years old, the middle Culkin brother shared with the Los Angeles Times that when he initially watched the holiday classic, he was unaware of its plot. All his young mind grasped was that it was amusing, and for him, that, along with the limited instructions he received about portraying Fuller, sufficed.
I watched a film without knowing its plot, surprisingly it featured me. The premiere had me in stitches, it was the most hilarious thing I’ve ever witnessed. Honestly, I still didn’t grasp the movie’s storyline. Here, have some Coke, put on these glasses, remember the lines, be adorable and head home.
Kieran Culkin Thought ‘Home Alone’ Was Buzz’s Story
Not only did it add to the comedy, but Macaulay Culkin confessed that during the filming of Home Alone, he believed the plot revolved around Buzz instead of Kevin. As portrayed exceptionally by Devin Ratray, Buzz was Kevin’s elder brother and constant tormentor before the intrusion of the Wet Bandits. In other words, even before the burglars appeared on the scene, Buzz was a recurring annoyance to his younger sibling.
In my experience, during breaks on the set of Succession, Kieran Culkin’s stand-in, Ratray, skillfully convinced me, as an admirer might say, that I was the central figure, rather than the esteemed Macaulay Culkin. It wasn’t until I watched the movie that I understood the truth and had a hearty chuckle over the situation.
Devin Ratray, who portrays Buzz in a film, deceived me by claiming the entire movie revolved around him, which I unquestioningly accepted. However, when I finally watched it, I found myself laughing throughout, and thought to myself, ‘Given that Mac was always on set, it seems plausible that the movie would focus on him.’
