Kieran Culkin found the motivation for his award-winning performance in the 2025 Oscars for “A Real Pain” from an unforeseen influence, a fact his wife ultimately pointed out to him.
The award-winning actor, who triumphed in the Best Supporting Actor category on Sunday, shared with journalists in the Academy Awards press room that he found Jesse Eisenberg’s script to be so meticulously crafted, he felt little need for rehearsing his scenes.
Culkin expressed that it seemed unusual. He described it as if he’d never before read something where he thought, ‘I get him completely. I don’t even feel the need to read it again.'”
Or more informally:
“Culkin said it was unlike anything else he’d read. It made him think, ‘I really grasp this author. I don’t even want to reread it.’
The actor from “Succession” continued by expressing his admiration for the fresh, entertaining technique, stating that the conversation seemed to naturally pour out of him.
I had a gut feeling about this character, yet couldn’t put my finger on who he reminded me of,” I admitted. “Initially, I chose not to dissect it as soon as I read the script, instead thinking, ‘I recognize this person. I’ll just go with the flow and perform.’ It wasn’t until about a year later when I finally watched it that I exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness! I know someone exactly like this!’ It didn’t occur to me earlier that I was subconsciously mimicking him.
It wasn’t just the actor who noticed resemblances to someone from Culkin’s life; it struck others as well: “As soon as I recognized it, my wife whispered in my ear at a theater – and she said his name. And I replied, ‘You’re right! I’m definitely imitating him.’ I hadn’t realized it before. It was an odd yet uncanny moment. I’ve never experienced anything like that before.
At the Oscars, during my acceptance speech for playing Benji, I acknowledged my wonderful wife, Jazz Charton, who was there too. You see, we traveled together to Poland as a tribute to our late grandmother. It’s all thanks to her that we share two beautiful children. Last year, while accepting another award, I jokingly teased her about wanting a third child. Well, if I won an Oscar, she said, she would promise to have two more kids with me! And here we are, celebrating this special moment together.
Apologies once more for repeating myself, let’s jump right into discussing the children,” Culkin joked. “Thoughts?
At the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Conan O’Brien took charge as host for the 2025 Oscar ceremony. Don’t miss out on the glamorous red carpet entrances!
