Legendary actress Kim Basinger, who’s been gracing screens for nearly a decade, has portrayed an array of characters – from Batman’s love interest to an unofficial Bond girl, and even a character exploring BDSM, among others. Despite her numerous roles that often required sensuality and suggestiveness, Kim holds a contentious opinion about the importance of intimacy coordinators on film sets.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the captivating performances of an actress whose roles in films like “Batman,” “8 Mile,” “9 1/2 Weeks,” and “L.A. Confidential” left an indelible mark on the silver screen. This legendary actress, who was honored with an Academy Award in 1998 for her remarkable talent, recently shared intimate insights into her career during a seldom-granted interview with Variety.
In this candid conversation, she reflected on the experience of filming “9 1/2 Weeks,” a steamy 1986 romantic drama that co-starred Mickey Rourke. In this film, I played a New York City girl who dared to explore a BDSM-style relationship with another New Yorker. Think of it as the 80s equivalent of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” a tale that didn’t originate from the creative minds of “Twilight” fan fiction.
In a recent interview, Basinger shared her thoughts on the concept of intimacy coordinators on set, which wasn’t even imaginable during the filming of 9½ Weeks. Although she acknowledged that she had no qualms about the movie’s explicit scenes, which were revolutionary at the time, Basinger discussed the emotional strain experienced while making the film. However, it seems she doesn’t believe that intimacy specialists would have been beneficial in this aspect.
It seems unusual to me to envision someone approaching me and asking, “May I place my hand here?” To me, that person is simply another individual in the room. Whether we find a way to coexist or not, that’s up for discussion. I don’t see the necessity for closely monitored visits.
Basinger adds that a movie of such kind wouldn’t be produced nowadays (interestingly, her recent film roles include the Fifty Shades series). She also shared some insights about collaborating with director Adrian Lyne and imposing certain requirements to lend credibility to her character portrayal.
As a dedicated cinephile, there’s one moment in cinema that has always intrigued me – the chance encounter with Mickey Rourke in that grocery store scene from our movie. You see, prior to that moment, I had never wished to address him or converse with him on set. It wasn’t about the rumors swirling online regarding our supposed animosity. On the contrary, I admired him immensely; he’s a supremely talented actor. However, my first interaction with him was purely cinematic, and I had never laid eyes on him outside of that film.
Kim Basinger Shared Her Take on Guy Pearce’s Allegations Against Kevin Spacey on the Set of ‘L.A. Confidential’
In the film “L.A. Confidential,” it’s Basinger who embodies Lynn Bracken, a sophisticated prostitute entangled in a scandalous affair involving Tinseltown’s elite. Initially hesitant due to her recent motherhood, she later agreed to take on the role, drawn by the exceptional quality of the script. Undeniably, it showcases her finest acting work.
Variety inquired from Basinger whether she observed any unacceptable actions by Kevin Spacey during the film set. Lately, it emerged that Guy Pearce shared his experiences of being vulnerable and targeted by Spacey. However, Basinger stated that she didn’t notice any suspicious behavior on Spacey’s part.
To put it simply, I had absolutely no clue about anything related to that kind of activity. I worked very closely with Russell Crowe, and also with Guy Pearce. As a result, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but honestly, I don’t think I ever really noticed Kevin or Guy in the same context.
However, Guy is an exceptional individual. In my past, I shared a dinner date with Kevin Spacey, though this occurred several years back and it wasn’t just the two of us; another well-known figure in the music industry was also present. Beyond that incident, I must admit that I am not particularly acquainted with Kevin Spacey.
