As a connoisseur of art and literature, steeped in the rich tapestry of cultural history, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming exhibition, “Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston.” The Bloomsbury Group was a beacon of intellectualism and creativity that left an indelible mark on the world of arts and letters, and it’s a privilege to see their works showcased so beautifully in this exhibition.
In the early 1900s, a fresh cultural environment took shape in East Sussex. This group, which included writers, artists, and philosophers, was known as the Bloomsbury Group. They signified a groundbreaking modern mindset in England. Initially gathering in London’s thriving art district of Bloomsbury, they eventually established a base at Charleston, the rural farmhouse of artist Vanessa Bell.
Approximately a century on, Sotheby’s has unveiled a fresh private sale and loan exhibition in partnership with Charleston, showcasing artworks by the significant intellectual collective at their estate-turned-museum. This exhibition, titled Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston , is carefully curated by former Fendi and Dior menswear director Kim Jones, and aims to pay tribute to the daring and innovative mindset of the Bloomsbury Group.
The showcase showcases an impressive assortment of furniture, ceramics, paintings, and sketches, elegantly presented to reflect the group’s distinctive, bohemian decor. Notable items for individual purchase are:
From Duncan Grant’s post-impressionist works on quilted coats in Dior Men’s Summer 2023 to the Bloomsbury-inspired Victorian photo album for The Fendi Set, it’s no secret that Jones has been a long time admirer of the group. Earlier this year, the creative director was appointed vice president of Charleston, and will lend the pieces from his personal collection for the exhibition. “I love the way they shook things up,” he notes in a recent press statement. “I love living with these amazing pieces in my home, but I think it’s important to give other people the opportunity to come face to face with them, so they can experience that same moment I have, when something from so long ago speaks to something within you.”
The exhibition titled “Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston” is set to be displayed at Charleston from November 9 to November 26, 2024. This event will align with the semi-annual Sotheby’s auction of Modern British & Irish Art, which takes place on November 14.
