As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for quirky, chaotic games that offer a dash of humor and creativity, King of Meat has piqued my interest like no other. The tantalizing blend of Fall Guys’ madcap energy, LittleBigPlanet’s player-built content, and a sprinkle of Gladiators or Running Man has me buzzing with anticipation.
It’s not usual to go to a pre-release event without knowing the game you’re going to play, but in the case of King of Meat, that might be for the best. The developers themselves aren’t completely sure about the origin of its name, and yet it seems perfectly suited.
merging the anarchic spirit of Fall Guys with the user-generated levels of LittleBigPlanet, plus a hint of Gladiator or Running Man for added fun, it’s looking like the perfect break from intense hero shooter games and similar heavy-duty content.
Tune in
As a gamer, I’m totally hooked on “King of Meat,” a game that takes me to a world where this action-packed TV show is the only one on air. It’s like a ruthless battle royale for those seeking fame and fortune, all played out against the shadowy backdrop of cunning corporations pulling the strings as the game’s sponsors.
Although it didn’t provide a clear sense of overarching narrative elements (if they exist), the production exudes an enchanting ambiance reminiscent of Python-style humor, blending fantasy and absurdity to deliver a distinctly British brand of comedy. Given its origins at a studio that includes veterans from Lionhead (Fable) and Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet), this is hardly unexpected.
Characters navigate through chambers brimming with obstacles and adversaries, employing both ranged and close-combat weapons along with tailored skills. During my demo session, I managed to unleash clouds toxic to enemies or summon the massive legs of a steed to trample them (which made the commentator exclaim, “why do horses seem to dislike us so much?”).
In the Komstruct Koliseum, teams of four can join forces, including yourself and three friends. During the breaks between exploring dungeons, you’ll advance in level, earning fresh equipment and visual enhancements. The Ironlaw Plaza is filled with various NPCs – from a barkeeper who boosts your stats using tonics, shops offering cosmetic upgrades, to an actual Dragon that aids you on your journey.
Not-so Darkest Dungeon
Embracing similarities with games such as LittleBigPlanet, the allure of King of Meat lies in its creative toolset that enables users to construct themed dungeons brimming with traps, mysteries, and additional elements.
During our playtime, I encountered several outstanding creations, each constructed within the game. Although I haven’t managed to build one on my own, there’s a unique charm in demolishing others’ structures in pursuit of hidden riches.
From puzzle-focused dungeons to platforming and combat-heavy ones, there’s a little something for whatever mood you’re in. You’ll earn a score based on the completion time, dungeon difficulty, and treasure acquired, too, with different trophy thresholds.
Even during the simpler dungeons in our playtest it was tough to place above Silver, and subsequent leagues will only ramp up the difficulty for those brave (or foolhardy) enough to accept the challenge.
Glowmade Studios’ developer indicates that more than a hundred dungeons will be available at the game’s release. However, if the creation tool is as user-friendly as the demo suggests, it’s quite possible that numerous additional dungeons could be generated in just a few short weeks by players.
Final Thoughts
Unfortunately, as of now, we don’t have a set release date for the game “King of Meat”. It’s disappointing because I can’t wait to design my own malicious maze and test my friends’ courage by having them navigate it safely.
As a gamer, I’m genuinely excited about this upcoming game from Amazon. Its quirky appeal, versatile cooperative play options, and massive dungeons to explore right from the start and beyond make it a potential smash hit in my book!
King of Meat is slated to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series consoles and Nintendo Switch.
