Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Finale
As a devoted fan, I must say that “Daredevil: Born Again” took the excitement levels sky-high in its season finale with some jaw-dropping twists. One such shocker was Wilson Fisk’s transformation into the tyrant ruling New York City, echoing his dark past as the ruthless Kingpin we encountered a decade ago on Netflix’s “Daredevil.” The series began with Fisk aiming to redeem himself and protect the city as a reformed criminal, but alas, he slipped back into the malevolent character that chills us to the bone.
A particularly gruesome sequence in the finale of “Born Again” stands out as the most telling sign of this transformation, and the actor behind Fisk has shed light on how it unfolded.
In a chat with Variety, Vincent D’Onofrio shared his thoughts on the scene where Kingpin mercilessly kills Commissioner Gallo (portrayed by Michael Gaston). Not only is this scene frightening, but it’s also one of the most gruesome and violent moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, surpassing even the gory scenes from the original Netflix series. D’Onofrio explained that, as an actor, his initial reaction upon learning about the scene was to figure out the most effective way to execute it while making it authentic to the character of Daredevil. It’s safe to say he delivered exceptionally well.
Initially, I found myself questioning, “How can we make this scene unique? How will we distinguish it from similar scenes I’ve worked on before? How can we give our representation a fresh perspective?” Immediately, discussions with the production team and special effects crew began about staging the scene in a way that would bring my ideas to life. We brainstormed and eventually found an approach that sets our depiction apart from what audiences have previously seen. It’s intense; it’s quite extreme for an actor to discuss such content, but we aim to make this show stand out.
It’s only appropriate that the deadliest murder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is attributed to Kingpin, who has transformed into the merciless mayor of New York City. The aftermath of the commissioner’s death remains unclear, but it seems that the “Born Again” storyline won’t linger long on the ramifications of smashing his head in front of his task force. As stated by D’Onofrio, Wilson Fisk continues to manipulate public opinion, and this killing will only intensify the brutal nature of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force that he commands.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but feel the raw power radiating from this individual, seemingly operating alone in a complex web of politics. He’s got his eyes set on retaining his mayoral position, no matter what it takes. The chilling execution of Commissioner Gallo, a scene witnessed only by his task force, serves as a stark reminder of the ruthlessness he desires to instill. It’s a dark secret that I have little doubt will eventually be swept under the rug, hidden from the public eye.
How Far Will Kingpin Climb in His Ascent to Power in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’?
In the thrilling denouement of Daredevil: Born Again, it’s clear that Mayor Fisk has implemented martial law, swiftly imprisoning many of his adversaries, including Frank Castle, aka the Punisher (Jon Bernthal). So, what’s his master plan? Vincent D’Onofrio tantalizingly hints that Kingpin intends to commit as many crimes as possible while martial law persists. This spree will not only bolster his grip on New York City but also eliminate any pesky vigilantes, all with the ultimate goal of eventually extending his influence beyond the Big Apple.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’d put it like this: “His master scheme involves imposing martial law on the city, using this control to commit as many crimes as possible and eliminate the vigilantes. This, in his mind, would pave the way for him to eventually extend his influence far beyond the streets of New York.
Is there any chance that the Kingpin might run for President? It’s possible, but the actor doesn’t see it happening due to his perception of the character as more corrupt than political. He said, “I don’t really view him as a political figure; I see him as a crooked one. I suppose it could happen, but I seriously doubt he’ll choose that route.
