Knights of Pen and Paper 3 review – “Returning to the table!”

Knights of Pen and Paper 3 review - "Returning to the table!"

  • A third try being every player at a tabletop game
  • There’s charm in tone and visuals with better details
  • Lots of strategy variety with more desired in enemies

As a seasoned gamer with decades of tabletop gaming under my belt, I must say that Knights of Pen and Paper 3 has managed to capture the essence of those unforgettable sessions like no other game before it. The charm in tone and visuals is reminiscent of the old days when we’d gather around a table with our dice and our imagination, creating entire worlds together.

Here’s an engaging task for you! Let’s try to rank these three scenarios from most likely to least likely to occur: organizing a regular gathering for playing a tabletop game, achieving sustainable renewable energy worldwide, and establishing world peace.

In simpler terms, since the solution is glaringly apparent, we might need to consider options such as the Knights of Pen and Paper series as an alternative.

Kyy Games have successfully progressed, having developed Knights of Pen and Paper 3, which could be considered the culmination (or not) of their trilogy. This 2D pixel RPG, inspired by tabletop gaming, has found a home on mobile devices; we’ll see if it settles in nicely.

What is Knights of Pen and Paper 3?

Anyone who has tried to run a tabletop session knows how much planning goes into creating an entire world with a complex story, and how much of it ends up getting thrown out the window. Knights of Pen and Paper 3 takes the unorthodox but still widely accepted approach of “winging it”.

As a gamer, I’ve been invited by the Game Master to embark on an epic adventure with a few friends, leaving room for more to join if desired. We’re about to form a motley crew, each of us embodying unique characters hailing from various backgrounds, species, and professions. The goal is to make it through this journey alive, and the only way we can prove our mettle as true heroes is by surviving the occasional odd jobs thrown our way. Let’s see if we’ve got what it takes!

The Chivalrous Knights of Pen and Paper 3

In essence, the purpose of a tabletop game is to create an immersive adventure where you and your companions assume different characters. Knights of Pen and Paper 3 simplifies this experience similarly to its predecessors by allowing you to embody your own character and those of your friends.

In a game, the Game Master (GM) is the entity not actively participating, as they are essentially the game itself against which you play. It’s intriguing that even when you’re playing solo, there’s a sense of companionship due to your friends engaging in conversation among themselves, turning the experience into something more social and less intense.

This point is further reinforced by its impressive visual design. Among the series, it stands out as the most visually appealing, with the pixel art being more distinct yet harmonious with its counterparts. The captivating graphics primarily stem from the enemies, who are animated to a great extent, allowing players’ and game master’s imagination to bring them to life.

They walk this weird line of looking somewhat goofy but still being very threatening. You never know whether that cute little blob will turn out to be the toughest thing you’ve faced so far – and that makes encounters exciting, especially when ambushes are on the table.
There’s also the sharp increase in difficulty that comes with grinding so that you can blast through certain missions. This isn’t always the case as some missions can be several levels lower and the enemies will still wreck your friendships. Of course, you’ll only learn more about the enemies through fighting, but you’ll never know if you’re ill-prepared until it’s too late.

With just five distinct foes, there’s always a chance one could land a critical blow, leaving you feeling defeated and dejected. The consequences of failure aren’t too severe, but they can become tiresome over time and accumulate, eventually becoming more challenging to manage.

In simpler terms, Knights of Pen and Paper 3 is a 2D role-playing game where you and your friends play a pretend tabletop game guided by an improvised game master. The graphics and dialogues are appealing and humorous, while the variety in your party composition offers numerous abilities and tactics to explore.

In this game, you’ll often find yourself battling similar adversaries whose strength can vary unpredictably from one encounter to another, with the difficulty level seemingly inconsistent. Yet, compared to assembling a group of three friends to roll dice, embarking on another adventure with these pen-and-paper knights provides a more dependable experience.
